Top Ten Winter Days

Here we describe what we consider to be perfect winter days, and these do not necessarily involve skiing.

Skiing to the summit of Ruten from Fefor. This is a demanding cross-country excursion, with a long ascent, but it’s certainly worth it – you feel as though you’re on top of the world. And if that isn’t enough, when you’ve finally had enough of the views, you get to ski down across virgin snow – great fun!

Watching the Northern Lights from Ylläs (admittedly more of a night-time than a daytime activity!). If you are lucky, you will see some fantastic displays from Ylläs. The dancing swirls of greenish light really are a magical sight.

Horse-drawn sleigh ride across the Seiseralm Plateau. Wrapped up in warm blankets, this is an enjoyable way to admire the scenery, requiring minimal exertion – perfect if you’re feeling lazy.

Winter walk around the lake at Pertisau. Attractive routes lead from Pertisau around the shores of Lake Achensee, which is particularly picturesque as it never freezes over.

Glacier ExpressFrom Chur to Kandersteg on the Glacier Express. This is a truly thrilling winter train journey. The scenery is breathtaking, first up the valley of the infant Rhine which is framed by snow-clad mountains, over the Oberalp Pass and down through the beautiful valley of the infant Rhône.

Ascending from Engelberg to Mount Titlis in the revolving cable car. No stay in Engelberg would be complete without visiting Mount Titlis in the world’s first revolving cable car, which gives you maximum enjoyment of the views.

Snow-shoe walking in the Engadine. What makes snow-shoeing so rewarding is that you can strike out across virgin snow. It is the ideal way to discover this idyllic winter wonderland, where snowy meadows and silent woods are framed by majestic mountains.

Dog-sleddingTravelling from Bergen to the Lofoten Islands on the Norwegian Coastal Steamer. The journey may take three days, but it’s impossible to tire of the beautiful scenery of towering mountains and deep fjords.

Downhill skiing at St-Luc. Downhill as it should be – relaxed, exhilarating and completely carefree – with thrilling, varied runs away from the crowds (and no long lift queues!).

Dog-sledding in Finland. Feel a tingle of adventure as the sled glides across the snow, pulled by a team of huskies. If you're quiet, you may spot wildlife such as elk and Arctic foxes.
