Posthotel Engiadina, Zuoz, Engadine
A location at the midpoint of one of the top two cross-country domains in Switzerland, plenty of winter walking, glorious Alpine scenery, exquisitely painted houses and a romantic, tranquil atmosphere…south-facing Zuoz has it all. Add to this a stylish 4-star hotel offering the highest standards of comfort and hospitality, and you have all the ingredients for a wonderful winter holiday. The first thing to strike you when you arrive is the warm welcome from the English-speaking Arquint family and their team. The second is the Grand Tour elegance of the hotel – first opened 130 years ago, the Posthotel Engiadina is a careful blend of old and new, with traditional features complemented by modern details and facilities. Rooms: Bedrooms are elegant and individually furnished. Our prices include a room with a bath or a shower, though it is possible to upgrade to one of the superior rooms – which are even more spacious and all have bath – or a junior suite complete with a sitting area. The views from the rooms vary – some overlook the village, while others enjoy views of the valley and mountains. All are equipped with a telephone, television and hairdryer. Facilities: The hotel has a sauna, steam bath, solarium, television room, curling rink and sun terrace, as well as a rustic, wood-clad bar-cum-bistro which is popular among the locals. However, you may find yourself spending most time in the handsome lounges, whose high ceilings, fireplaces and large picture windows recall the era of the Grand Tour. Complimentary tea is served here daily at 4pm. The hotel organises a weekly programme of events, including slideshows and guided tours of the village. Restaurant: Meals are served in the chandeliered dining room; breakfast is from the buffet bar with a choice of cereals, cheeses, cold meats, yoghurts and bread. In the evening you dine from a four-course menu typically with a choice of two dishes for your main course and three dishes for dessert. A vegetarian option is always available, and a special meal such as a fondue is held by your hosts on certain weeks (on other weeks they invite you to an aperitif). To ring the changes, you can upgrade to the à la carte restaurant which serves delicious international and Engadine specialities. Skiing and other winter activities: Zuoz is a paradise for cross-country skiers, with 13 kilometres from the village’s own ski centre, a fifteen-minute walk from the hotel. A total of 210 kilometres of trails catering for all levels (including those who prefer skating to classic skiing) can be accessed by using the railway that runs between Scuol and glamorous St Moritz (pay locally) or by taking advantage of the free minibus transfers provided by the hotel three days a week. We include a cross-country ski permit for the Upper Engadine Valley allowing you to make the most of your stay. If you visit Zuoz in early March, you can witness the amazing spectacle of the annual Engadine Ski Marathon which begins in Maloja and ends, 42 kilometres later, in S-Chanf, having passed through Zuoz. Apart from this one weekend, you can ski on the Zuoz section of this excellent course all season. The village: Strolling around Zuoz it is possible to imagine the village as it was years ago – many of the traditional Engadine houses still have their haylofts and are prettily decorated with pastel-coloured murals. The hotel is located in the centre of the village, where you will find a ski shop, cafés, a bank and a post office. Christmas festivities: If you are holidaying over Christmas, you can enjoy a complimentary sleigh ride, a special meal, and a classical music recital on Christmas Day. New Year celebrations: New Year arrangements include a gala dinner with music, after which you can go outside to watch the village fireworks at midnight. Prices & travel
