Romantik Hotel Bella Tola, St-Luc, Val d'Anniviers

Voted Historic Hotel of the Year 2001, this handsome late 19th-century hotel in the small, traditional village of St-Luc has featured in our winter programme since 1998 and continues to impress guests. With beautiful antiques, polished wood floors and plenty of attention to detail, the hotel is elegant and stylish, evoking the era of the Grand Tour.
The wonderful cuisine is also worthy of praise but what makes a stay at this 4-star hotel truly special is the attentiveness and warm hospitality of your charming, English-speaking hosts, Anne-Françoise and Claude Buchs, who are co-founders of the Swiss Historic Hotels Group and are determined to preserve the hotel’s romantic fin-de-siècle feel. The hotel makes the perfect place to unwind after a day’s carefree downhill skiing on St-Luc’s gloriously quiet pistes.
Rooms: Of the 34 spacious, individually decorated bedrooms, we offer only those that face south and therefore enjoy the magnificent views across the valley to the ring of mountains over 4,000 metres high, including the mighty 4,478-metre Matterhorn itself. The twin beds are extremely comfortable (they can be made up as a double if you prefer), and the rooms are furnished with handsome late 19th-century antiques that are complemented by Anne-Françoise’s artistic touches. They are equipped with a shower, telephone, television and tea and coffee-making facilities.
For a small charge, you can choose to stay in a room with a balcony or, for something that little bit more special, plus a bath and slightly more space, upgrade to one of the ‘romantic rooms’ (with or without balcony), which are equipped with a hairdryer, telephone, television, tea and coffee-making facilities and fluffy bathrobes. With a sitting area, the superior rooms are large enough to add a couple of extra beds (as are the ‘romantic rooms’), or there are several adjoining rooms with connecting doors that are perfect for families.
Facilities: Sympathetically designed to blend in with the rest of the hotel, the well-appointed spa complex comprises a plunge pool with a seating area with an open fire, a whirlpool, sauna, steam bath, ice cavern, solarium, massage facilities and a panoramic relaxation area that looks across to the Matterhorn. Furthermore, the public rooms, which include a cosy lounge, a couple of smaller salons and a reading room with internet access, provide plenty of space to relax. Complimentary tea and apple tart made according to the hotel’s secret recipe are served by the open fire in the main lounge every afternoon.
Restaurant: In keeping with the rest of the hotel, the restaurant is elegant and atmospheric, with a polished wooden floor, frescoed ceiling and crisp white linen – a beautiful setting for the delicious, well-presented cuisine.
You dine from a daily-changing five-course menu with choice, with a separate menu (again with a choice of dishes) for vegetarians. Over the course of the week you can sample a variety of local wines – a different wine is suggested each night (pay locally). One evening a week guests gather round one long table for a special raclette (a traditional meal of melted cheese with potatoes and meats).
Skiing and other winter activities: Of all the villages in our programme, few can beat the downhill skiing at St-Luc, where the sunny south and east-facing slopes offer relaxed, carefree alpine skiing to a height of 3,025 metres. At this altitude, the snow record is excellent, and the views wonderful. You will often have the pistes virtually to yourselves, especially on weekdays, another reason why skiing here is so enjoyable.
At St-Luc itself, there are 25 blue and red runs totalling 75 kilometres, served by 13 draglifts and accessed by means of the regular free ski bus (which picks skiers up from right outside the hotel) and a four-minute trip up the funicular.
Intermediate and advanced skiers will enjoy the longer, more challenging slopes at Zinal, Grimentz and Vercorin, whose equally sunny runs are covered by the same ski pass and can be reached using the post bus (pay locally).
We offer special beginners' weeks for anyone who is new to downhill skiing.
For a break from skiing, explore St-Luc’s 35 kilometres of winter walking paths.
The village: The pretty village of St-Luc is a cluster of traditional wooden chalets among which is a small handful of shops, cafés and bars.
