Combining all the elements for a wonderful and relaxing holiday, the 4-star Hotel Matschner on the high Ramsau Plateau continues to earn consistently high praise from guests, who appreciate the delicious cuisine, the tranquil location, the direct access to the cross-country skiing and winter walking, and the attentive service provided by the two generations of the English-speaking Knaus family that own the hotel.

Rooms: The no-smoking bedrooms are smart and well equipped, with a private balcony from which to admire the dramatic panoramas.
All have a shower, radio, telephone, hairdryer and television. If you would like more space (and a bath), you can upgrade up to one of the larger rooms, which also all have a balcony.

Facilities: There is plenty of space to relax throughout the hotel, including a cosy wood-panelled stube bar, a lounge with an indoor garden in which complimentary cakes are served each afternoon, a sun terrace and a massage room.
In addition, an adjoining spa complex, accessed by a short underground tunnel from the hotel and also open to the public, offers two indoor pools (one measuring 24 x 12 metres, the other 10 x 8 metres), whirlpools, saunas, jacuzzis, steam-showers, a solarium and a relaxarium.

Restaurant: Like the other public rooms, the restaurant is light and attractive, with plenty of pinewood.
Breakfasts are a generous buffet including home-made bread and local cheeses, while dinner is a four-course meal of refined, highly-praised Austrian cuisine. For the salad course and dessert, you can take your pick from the extensive buffet.
A special fondue evening or gala dinner is held once a week, and vegetarians are always well catered for - a separate menu is offered every evening. In addition, there are always organic options incorporating produce from the hotel's own organic farm.

Skiing & other winter activities: The hotel's excellent location means that you have direct access to the cross-country trails. The ski school, too, is right by the hotel. In total, 150 kilometres of trails criss-cross the plateau (which is 18 kilometres long by 4 wide), with the jagged Dachstein peaks providing a dramatic backdrop. Dotted with cafés, the trails cater for all levels from beginner to advanced skier; in 1999 the plateau hosted the Nordic World Championships. There is a further 15-20 kilometres of skiing on the Dachstein Glacier which, at 2,700 metres above sea level, is one of the few places in Europe to offer year-round cross-country skiing.
In addition to the excellent cross-country skiing, there are some short downhill runs for beginners just outside the village, plus 3 kilometres of pistes on the glacier. To extend your range, the ski bus to Schladming gives access to the huge Ski Amadé area and a staggering 860 kilometres of alpine skiing over five interconnected domains.
Walkers can enjoy the 70 kilometres of prepared paths, and you can also take a horse-drawn sleigh ride, try your hand at curling or tobogganing, go horse riding or join a guided snow-shoe excursion (our prices include two half-day guided excursions with your hosts and other guests).
