First opened in 1326, the 4-star Hotel Kirchenwirt is cosy and full of history, from the vaulted entrance hall to the atmospheric restaurant. There are just seventeen bedrooms, ensuring a certain intimacy. This very special ambience is enhanced by the friendliness and high levels of personal attention offered by the Unterrainer family, which has owned the hotel for more than 130 years of its long history. It is completely in harmony with the small village of Leogang in the tranquil Saalach Valley, whose deeply traditional atmosphere belies the fact that it has hosted several cross-country ski championships and is very close to one of Austria’s best alpine skiing domains, Saalbach-Hinterglemm. In such a setting, it is easy to remove yourself from the everyday world so that, after a week of enjoyable cross-country or downhill skiing, you return home feeling fully refreshed.

Rooms: The spacious bedrooms have either a shower or a bath and are equipped with a radio, telephone, hairdryer and satellite television.

Facilities: The lounge and television room are complemented by a small spa consisting of a steam room, jacuzzi, dry sauna, tanning beds and facilities for massages.

Restaurant: The atmospheric restaurant is acclaimed locally for its imaginative and very varied Austrian cuisine incorporating local (and often organic) ingredients such as lamb, venison, chicken and fish. Breakfast is a generous buffet served in the cosy breakfast room with its large open fire.

Skiing and other winter activities: From the hotel door, cross-country trails lead both up and down the valley, offering a particularly wide choice for beginners and intermediates. You can extend your range by making use of the valley’s ski bus to access the furthest reaches of the 150-kilometre network – the domain around the nearby village of Saalfelden is especially large.
If alpine skiing is your passion, buses also run to the ski school and gondola station ten minutes away, from where you can easily connect to the renowned Saalbach-Hinterglemm domain and its 200 kilometres of top-quality skiing. There is also a small beginners' piste immediately behind the hotel.
The winter walking in the valley is also wonderful (there are 40 kilometres of paths), and the ski school organises weekly snow-shoe excursions, torchlit walks and a free ski show accompanied by a glass of mulled wine.

The village: The Saalach Valley is very much the quiet face of the Salzburgerland, and Leogang is fittingly unspoiled, with just a shop and a tourist office.

New Year celebrations: See in the New Year with a lavish gala dinner (champagne and drinks are included), live music, dancing into the small hours and other festive extras.
