Posthotel Lamm, Kastelruth, Südtirol Dolomites
For a magical winter experience, and easy access to equally fantastic cross-country and downhill skiing, plus a wide range of other activities, look no further than the 4-star Posthotel Lamm. Here, you can spend your days making the most of the snow on the Seiseralm Plateau, a true winter playground, and your evenings enjoying the old-world charms of one of the South Tyrol’s most idyllic villages, Kastelruth. Though its location on the main square of such a delightful village is one of the Lamm’s greatest attractions, this is a hotel with plenty of charm and character of its own. From the warm hospitality of Horst Trocker and his family to the attractive spa, the hotel carefully combines all the features you would expect of a modern 4-star hotel with the ambience of a 200-year-old coaching inn. Rooms: The handsome bedrooms we include in our arrangements overlook the square and are equipped with a shower (or, in a few cases, a bath), telephone, satellite television, safety deposit box, hairdryer and bathrobes. For real style, spaciousness, picture windows overlooking Kastelruth or the mountains, a bath and extra luxuries such as a minibar and music system, it is well worth upgrading to one of the larger rooms in the newer wing. Facilities: There is plenty of space in which to relax, not least several lounges, the largest of which has a bar and an open fire. The second bar, the cosy Postkeller, is as popular with locals as it is with guests. The beautifully appointed spa includes an indoor pool measuring 10 by 5 metres, a sauna, a solarium, a jacuzzi, and facilities for a wide variety of massages and body and beauty treatments. Restaurant: The atmospheric, wood-panelled restaurant is the setting for delicious South Tyrolean cuisine such as polenta, knödeln (dumplings) and white-wine soup that has gained local acclaim. Many dishes are delicately flavoured with local herbs grown in the hotel’s kitchen garden, and the excellent cuisine is perfectly complemented by the wine list, which includes a wide range of South Tyrolean and Italian wines. For a small charge, you can join your hosts for a wine tasting session held once a week. Breakfast is a generous buffet served until 10.30am. Skiing and other winter activities: The lace-like peaks of the Dolomites – surely the most beautiful range in the Alps – provide a dramatic backdrop to the skiing on the high Seiseralm Plateau above Kastelruth. Few of our chosen areas offer cross-country and downhill skiing so close together. While the 43 kilometres of cross-country trails cater for all levels, with easy tracks across the meadows and more demanding trails into the mountains, the emphasis of the 70-kilometre alpine domain (served by lots of easy-to-use chairlifts) is on runs for beginners and intermediates; further top-quality skiing, including extensive slopes for advanced skiers, is available in the Dolomiti Superski area, accessed by ski bus. The village: Historic Kastelruth is a German-speaking village that is steeped in tradition and still observes long-standing customs, such as occasional torchlit processions. Facilities include shops, banks and cafés. Christmas festivities: If you are holidaying over Christmas, you can enjoy guided winter walks, a lantern walk, a visit to a local Christmas market, zither music recitals and gala dinners. New Year celebrations: The hotel marks New Year with a lengthy gourmet meal, music, dancing and a special brunch on 1 January. Prices & travel:
