Goldene Rose Hotel
Karthaus, Südtirol

An idyllic hotel in a valley with year-round downhill skiing is a combination that is irresistible. Add the tranquillity of the Schnalstal Valley, the beauty of the scenery and the warm welcome at the Goldene Rose Hotel to the mix, and you have all the ingredients for a very relaxing holiday.

Located in the centre of attractive Karthaus, the 3-star Goldene Rose is the epitome of a charming small hotel, combining style and understated elegance with cosiness and intimacy. What really makes the hotel, however, is the hospitality of hosts Paul and Steffi Grüner, who pride themselves on their attentive service.

Rooms: There are just 22 cosy bedrooms, all decorated individually in warm, earthy colours with wooden floors, traditional pine and larch-wood furniture and white marble bathrooms, some with stylish wooden sinks.
We reserve the superior rooms with a balcony for you so that you can appreciate the views over the village and valley. They are equipped with a satellite television and telephone. If you are travelling with your family, we recommend the hotel’s apartments, a three-minute walk from the main building.

Facilities: The facilities include a small spa incorporating a sauna, but you will probably find yourselves gravitating towards the atmospheric bar – complete with a 300-year-old skittles game – which is popular with the locals, and the tranquil wood-panelled reading room complete with a fire. It is here that complimentary tea – made with herbs from the hotel's own garden – and cakes are served in the afternoon.

Restaurant: The restaurant is light and airy, a pleasant setting for dinners of delicious, well-crafted Tyrolean cuisine incorporating local produce. The four-course menu with choice includes one course from the salad buffet. Breakfast is also a buffet.
The hotel's extensive weekly programme includes a series of themed nights in the restaurant, the highlight of which is the traditional Knödel (dumpling) menu!

Skiing and other winter activities: Regular free ski buses transport you to the gondola and ski lifts at the end of the valley, a scenic 25-minute journey that takes you past a frozen lake. Despite boasting year-round skiing on the glacier beneath peaks over 3,000 metres high (several national ski teams train here in the summer), the domain remains a well-kept secret, ensuring virtually no lift queues, uncrowded slopes and a friendly, laid-back atmosphere.
All this makes it a great place to learn or improve – the domain caters best for beginners, intermediates and families, with five blue, seven red and four black pistes. Right by the slopes is the Grüner family’s mountain café-cum-refuge, where we include a light lunch of soup or pasta if you happen to be passing at midday.
To ring the changes, explore the 20 kilometres of winter walking paths, enjoy an hour or two’s ice-skating or curling, join one of the ski touring excursions organised by the hotel, or go tobogganing.

The village: German-speaking Karthaus is a small village that remains every bit as tranquil as it was in the 14th century when a silent order of monks founded a monastery here. Most of the abbey has now been converted into cottages, but you can still visit the atmospheric cloisters.
Another interesting excursion is the archaeological park further along the valley, where you can learn about ‘Ötzi’, the Copper Age man found preserved in the ice near the Austrian border.
Facilities in the village include a bank, bakery and grocery. For a rather unique experience, it is well worth timing your holiday to coincide with the Ice Music Festival, during which concerts – performed on musical instruments made predominantly from ice – are held in an igloo on the glacier.

Christmas festivities: Christmas is marked at the hotel with a gala dinner and carol singing, and there is also the opportunity to attend Midnight Mass at the village church.

New Year celebrations: Enjoy a special dinner with live music that is followed by a party and fireworks at midnight, and rounded off with lentil soup at 1am.
