Hotel Victoria, Kandersteg, Bernese Oberland
View live webcam images of the snow in Kandersteg! There are many reasons why the 3-star Victoria, the oldest hotel in Kandersteg, has featured in our winter programme for twenty years, but it is mostly due to English-speaking Casi and Mimi Platzer and their team. With such an outstanding level of hospitality and personal attention – giving you the feeling of being a welcome house guest – you will want to come back time and again. Whether you are looking for a fun family holiday, a chance to try the wide-ranging activities on offer, or a relaxing week in the tranquillity of January and March simply appreciating the joys of winter, the Hotel Victoria makes the perfect base. Rooms: Our prices are based on our two favourite types of room. The ‘comfort rooms’ (which can accommodate a child’s bed) are in the more ‘recent’ part of the hotel built in Victorian times (hence the hotel’s name) and are therefore more modern in style than the slightly smaller ‘ritter rooms’ in the oldest part of the hotel. Fittingly, these latter rooms are cosy and rustic, often with wood-panelled walls, beamed ceilings and carved or hand-painted wooden furniture. Both room types have either a bath or a shower and are equipped with a telephone, radio and satellite television. Hairdryers, safety deposit boxes and bathrobes are available from reception. For families of two adults and up to three children, there are apartments available as an upgrade that comprise two bedrooms (one with bunk beds) and a bathroom. Facilities: The hotel’s great feature is the indoor pool measuring 6 by 12 metres. Its large windows afford views to the mountains beyond. In addition to the pool there is plenty more space to relax, including a sauna, a reading room, a large lounge with a bar, and a second lively yet cosy bar frequented by locals. As you would expect of a hotel that warmly welcomes families, the children’s facilities are excellent and include a babysitting service (pay locally), a large playroom, table tennis, board games, a free kindergarten for over threes from 12.30pm to 9pm Monday to Friday, and baby listening devices for hire. You can also buy baby packs consisting of a changing mat, nappy bin, bottle warmer, bathtub, thermometer and potty from reception. Restaurant: Complete with chandeliers and mountain views, the elegant Art Nouveau restaurant is an atmospheric setting for dinners of tasty Swiss cuisine. Here, you dine from a four-course menu typically with a choice of three main-course dishes, including a daily-changing vegetarian option, and there is also a themed buffet as well as a fondue or raclette every week. Children can dine at a separate sitting at 6.30pm. As an alternative to the main restaurant, you can pay an additional charge to dine in the à la carte restaurant, where one of the specialities is Tatarenhut, a kind of conical grill. Skiing & other winter activities: Ranked in Switzerland’s top three for its cross-country skiing, Kandersteg offers a total of 75 kilometres of trails for skiers of all levels, particularly intermediates. Easy beginners’ tracks lead from the hotel into the meadows beyond the village, while more challenging trails can be found in the mountains above, accessed by means of the chairlift or cable car. There is also 13 kilometres of beginners’ and intermediates’ downhill skiing above the village, with skiing for intermediates and advanced skiers at Lauchernalp, a 25-minute train and bus ride away. Alternatively, you could have a very varied and enjoyable winter holiday in Kandersteg without donning a pair of skis – other activities available include winter walking (there are 55 kilometres of specially prepared paths), curling, ice-skating, horse-drawn sleigh rides, tobogganing and snow-shoeing (Casi usually leads an excursion once a week). As Kandersteg has its own station, you can use the trains to visit the capital, Bern, or the unspoiled Lötschental Valley. The village: Nestling in the broad Kander Valley and surrounded by dramatic mountains, Kandersteg is a picture-book village with a pleasantly bustling centre where you will find a variety of shops, banks and cafés. Five-night Christmas breaks: Christmas is a very special time at the hotel, and our breaks include plenty of 'extras': a horse-drawn sleigh ride, a torchlit stroll, a fondue evening with musical entertainment, a gala dinner on Christmas Eve, and free entry to the village ice rink. Father Christmas will also pay a visit, bearing gifts for the children! We also offer short breaks throughout the season. New Year celebrations: If you are holidaying over New Year, you can enjoy a special dinner followed by music and dancing. Prices & travel:
