The spectacular Hemsedal Valley lies in the heart of Norway’s Central Uplands, an area of mountains so majestic that it is often referred to as the ‘Scandinavian Alps’. With miles of excellent cross-country trails and some of Northern Europe’s best downhill skiing, you can ascend above the picturesque forested slopes to discover a pristine wilderness framed by perfect blue skies.
The Fossheim Hotell is the oldest in the valley and is steeped in history and tradition. Three generations of the Langehaug family have lovingly run the Fossheim since it first opened its doors in 1906, and today the family continues to welcome guests with typical Norwegian friendliness and hospitality.

Rooms: There are just 38 rooms, of which we reserve the cosy, standard rooms with a shower, pine furniture and simple but homely décor. They vary in size, accommodating up to a family of five. For that bit of extra luxury, we recommend upgrading to one of the elegant and individually styled deluxe rooms situated in the annexe next door and furnished with beautiful dark wood furniture and rich, heavy fabrics. Most of these have a sofa bed to accommodate one or two children. All bedrooms are equipped with satellite television.

Facilities: The hotel’s public areas are cosy and inviting, furnished with plump sofas and decorated in warm colours that complement the exposed stonework. There are two very atmospheric wood-panelled lounges warmed by roaring fires, plus a bar, reading room, sauna and massage facilities (pay locally for the latter). For children, there is a playroom equipped with a games console and video and DVD players.

Restaurant: The hotel’s innovative chef treats you to creative dishes based on traditional Norwegian recipes that use local produce wherever possible. Our arrangements include a two-course dinner, but you can upgrade to a five-course menu if your day’s exertions have left you with a real appetite! A children’s menu is available on request.

Skiing and other winter activities: Recognised in particular for the high quality of its downhill ski domain, Hemsedal boasts some of the best skiing in the whole of Scandinavia, with a season that usually lasts from November to May. A five-minute journey in the free ski bus (which stops just outside the hotel) brings you to the alpine ski centre, whose 49 pistes are served by six chairlifts and sixteen draglifts and cater for all levels, with nineteen green slopes, twelve blue, nine red and eight black, plus some challenging off-piste skiing for expert skiers. On certain evenings during the week several pistes are floodlit so that you can ski after dark. As well as boasting Norway’s highest piste (which starts at an altitude of 1,497 metres and descends 810 metres over its 6-kilometre run), Hemsedal prides itself on having Norway’s largest children’s ski area, with numerous free activities for families organised by the ski school every week.
Winding through magnificent valleys, silent forests and past frozen lakes, the cross-country trails start just 200 metres from the door and again offer something for everyone, particularly novices and intermediates. In addition to the 130 kilometres of groomed trails (12 kilometres of which are floodlit every evening), there are 80 kilometres of thrilling waymarked but otherwise unprepared tracks into the mountains.
Besides the excellent skiing, Hemsedal offers a wide range of other activities, namely horse-drawn sleigh rides (some excursions into the forest include lunch around a blazing log fire), winter walking, snow-shoeing, dog-sledding, horse riding and ice-fishing.

The village: Hemsedal Valley offers a wide range of cafés and shops to ensure that you want for nothing during your stay. The Fossheim Hotell itself is located in the small hamlet of Ulsåk at 640 metres, close enough to all the facilities that you can access them easily, yet far enough away so as to be able to escape the bustle each evening.

Christmas festivities: If you are holidaying over Christmas, you can enjoy festive activities for children, a visit from Father Christmas, and a special Christmas buffet.

New Year celebrations: New Year is marked with a celebratory dinner. For something extra special, you can upgrade to the gourmet menu (pay locally).
