Here is an irresistible combination of a high-quality hotel and a lively, friendly village renowned for its relaxed atmosphere and, more importantly, its equally fantastic cross-country and downhill skiing. It is no surprise, then, that it is a place with a very wide appeal, attracting families with children of all ages (including teenagers) during the school holidays, and couples looking for some great skiing during the quieter months of January and March.

The Bardøla Hotel is a pleasant mix of ancient and modern, with Norwegian wood furniture and antiques providing a cosy feel. Having worked with Inntravel for many years, hosts Lise Marit and Roger Espeli and their team ensure that you are very well looked after, and are always on hand to offer help and advice.

Rooms: Although no two bedrooms are the same in terms of their décor, all are stylish and comfortable and are well-equipped with a shower or a bath, a minibar, telephone, satellite television and internet access. Hairdryers are available from reception. The standard rooms can take one extra bed; for more space, including a sitting area, upgrade to a junior suite or a family room, the latter of which sleeps up to five. Alternatively, you may wish to stay in one of the hotel’s self-catering cabins.

Facilities: The facilities are some of the most wide-ranging of our Norwegian hotels, and cater equally well for adults and children as they include lounges with open fires; an acclaimed café serving home-made pastries; a large bar with live music six nights a week; a sauna, jacuzzi and solarium; a large indoor pool with adjoining children’s swimming area; a playroom; organised children’s activities each evening; facilities for darts and billiards; and a private, floodlit ice rink. If you are travelling with children, you can borrow children’s videos and baby listening devices, and babysitting can be arranged for a charge.

Restaurant: The spacious and elegant restaurant is not only the setting for dinner, but also the impressive breakfast buffet, from which you make up your lunch pack. Dinner is a three-course buffet with fish and seafood specialities, plus plenty of game and meats such as reindeer. Only fresh Norwegian produce is used, and the hotel bakes its own bread and smokes its own fish.

Skiing and other winter activities: The great mountain moorland region of Hardangervidda lies above the fjords of western Norway, a snowy wilderness that is a paradise for winter holidays, whatever your level. From the hotel, both the 220-kilometre cross-country network and the twenty lifts to the downhill slopes are quickly and easily accessed by the free buses which serve the different ski areas on both sides of the valley. Whether you have opted for cross-country or downhill skiing or a mix of both, you will find the skiing first-rate – and pleasantly unhurried. The cross-country domain extends both across the valley, where there is a 5-kilometre floodlit trail around the village, and onto the fells above, thus catering for all levels, with tracks ranging in length from 1 to 20 kilometres.
Partly floodlit in the evenings, the two main areas of the alpine domain also offer something for everyone, with ten green slopes, nine blue, fifteen red and five black, some of which enable you to ski back to the hotel. We offer a special beginners' downhill skiing week if you are new to skiing.
If you fancy a change, horse-drawn sleigh rides and ice-fishing can be arranged locally, or you could take the famously dramatic Flåm Railway from the mountains to the fjords (pay locally).

The village: Pleasantly bustling Geilo is set in the middle of a valley by a frozen lake. From the hotel, which is located on the edge of the village, it is a fifteen-minute stroll to the centre with its shop, cafés, restaurants and bank.

Christmas festivities: If you are holidaying over Christmas, you can enjoy carols around the tree, live music on several evenings and a visit from Father Christmas.

New Year celebrations: New Year holidays include a special meal and a fireworks display, and you can join in a variety of organised activities for all the family.
