Gålå Høgfjellshotell, Gålå, Highlands
With its cosy atmosphere, outstanding restaurant and sweeping views across a lake to the Jotunheimen Mountains beyond, this is a top-quality hotel that earns consistently high praise from guests for its warm hospitality. It has also won awards for its environmental policies. The great thing here is the direct access from the door to brilliant cross-country skiing, with good downhill slopes and other winter activities nearby. Rooms: Of the 42 bedrooms, the hotel always reserves the more spacious superior rooms for Inntravel guests. These are beautifully appointed, with twin beds and other high-quality traditional Norwegian furniture. The shower rooms boast under-floor heating, while other facilities include a telephone, radio and satellite television. The superior rooms can accommodate an extra bed, but if you are travelling with children you may prefer to book a family room (which can sleep two adults and up to two small children on the double sofa bed) or two interconnecting rooms (ideal for teenagers). Alternatively, choose to stay in one of the well-appointed self-catering cabins. Restaurant: Boasting the most breathtaking lake views in the entire building, the intimate restaurant enjoys an excellent reputation locally. In keeping with the rest of the hotel, it is decorated in traditional Norwegian style, with plenty of light wood, and is the setting for dinners of authentic Norwegian cuisine incorporating local ingredients such as fish (including trout from Lake Gålå), berries and game according to season. It is also here that the extensive breakfast buffet is served, featuring, among many other things, home-made bread and cakes. Facilities: The hotel’s second focal point after the restaurant is the outdoor pool which, because it is heated to 26ºC, is open all year round, even in the heart of winter, when it is available for three hours every afternoon. Other facilities include a well-equipped fitness room, a massage room, a solarium and saunas. There is also a spacious lounge-cum-library stocked with many books in English as well as English-language board games; an internet room; and a bar with an open fire which regularly hosts live performances by jazz, classical and folk musicians. The hotel caters well for children, offering baby listening devices, a playroom, a children’s ‘cinema’ showing a children’s film every evening, and a special programme of events over Christmas and New Year, both of which are magical occasions here. Skiing and other winter activities: The snow arrives in Gålå in early November and lasts until late April. Gålå’s cross-country network, comprising 230 kilometres of trails, forms part of the vast Peer Gynt Domain, and is so good that the Norwegian cross-country team sometimes trains there. The well-maintained trails, some of which are specially prepared for skating, lead directly from the hotel over fells and through forests, with a wide choice for all levels ranging from 3 to 30 kilometres in length. There are also 5 kilometres of floodlit tracks which are lit until 10pm every day, plus a special trail for children, with plenty to entertain them along the way. We offer a special beginners' cross-country skiing week if you are new to the sport. The village: Gålå is best described as a hamlet, but nevertheless boasts a shop and a couple of cafés. This is the land of Peer Gynt, the hero of Henrik Ibsen’s epic poem, and is a deeply traditional area of great natural beauty. Christmas festivities: If you are holidaying over Christmas, you can enjoy special dinner buffets on several evenings, live music performances and a visit from Father Christmas. New Year celebrations: New Year holidays include a gala dinner followed by dancing. Peer Gynt Discovery: Our special holiday (with four nights at Fefor and three nights at Gålå) enables you to explore two cross-country domains. You travel the 12 kilometres between the two villages on skis, while your luggage is transported ahead. Peer Gynt Discovery prices:
