Above the frozen lake

It is hard to beat the location of the Fefor Hotel – it sits above a frozen lake in its own woodland dale, with views of the Jotunheimen Mountains beyond. This secluded position in an area of outstanding beauty is complemented by the tranquil, relaxed atmosphere and great sense of history created by your hosts and their team. But though the hotel’s traditions of hospitality date back to 1891, when Captain Scott stayed here, the facilities rival those of any modern hotel, providing plenty to do on your return from the trails.

Rooms: The bedrooms - all with a shower, television and telephone (hairdryers are available from reception) - are attractively decorated in warm colours and in a variety of styles. We include north-facing rooms, but you can upgrade to a south-facing room for a view over the lake. For families, there are large rooms with a sitting area that sleep two adults and up to three children.

Facilities: While the splendid style of a Victorian lodge lives on in the two panoramic lounges, which are decorated with sepia photographs recording Captain Scott’s stay, the impressive modern facilities include saunas, a good-sized swimming pool with far-reaching views across the lake, a floodlit outdoor ice rink for skating and (less frequently) curling, and even a squash court. On most evenings live music is performed in the bar area, where there is space for dancing. If this is not your cup of tea, cards and board games can be borrowed from reception.

Restaurant: The high-ceilinged, chandeliered restaurant’s outlook over the lake is rivalled only by that of the swimming pool. Except on certain days when a three-course sit-down meal is served, dinner is usually an extensive buffet, and you can help yourself to as much as you like of the different salads, cheeses, soups and hot main-course dishes of meat, fish or seafood. Children can dine as early as 6.30pm if they wish. Breakfasts are again a huge buffet including cold meats, ham, cheeses, rolled herrings, bread, cereals and porridge sprinkled with cinnamon sugar.

Skiing and other winter activities: With 200 kilometres of trails, Fefor is a cross-country skier’s paradise and is suited to anyone who has mastered the basics; beginners will need a few hours with the local ski guide, who is on hand at the hotel, before they will be able to tackle the tracks that lead directly from the hotel down to the frozen lake and onto the moorland. Here, with so many wonderful trails to choose from, you can explore, quite literally, for miles – the long-distance routes of up to 60 kilometres in length will thrill advanced skiers. Exhilarating guided ski tours of around six to seven hours can be arranged with the ski guide; beginners can also experience the thrill of a five-hour ski tour if they choose the three-day beginners' course (pay locally in all cases).
For downhill skiing, there is a good domain at nearby Gålå (30 minutes by bus; pay locally). The small alpine ski area at Fefor itself is open for a couple of weeks during the school holidays (please contact us for dates).
The hotel organises an extensive weekly programme of events, including curling, dog-sledding and even ice-fishing competitions.

Christmas festivities: If you are holidaying over Christmas you can enjoy a special dinner on 24 December, live music and a visit from Father Christmas.

New Year celebrations: Arrangements for New Year include fireworks, dancing and much more.

Peer Gynt Discovery: Our special holiday (with four nights at Fefor and three nights at Gålå) enables you to explore two cross-country domains. You travel the 12 kilometres between the two villages on skis, while your luggage is transported ahead.
