Woods & Abbeys
This popular, leisurely break features two of the most charming inns from our selection - the Auberge de l'Abbaye and the Petit Coq aux Champs - and varied walking through Normandy's most enchanting countryside. There are fine woodland sections and you pass ancient churches and villages.
Nights: 4
Grade: 1
Terrain: paths, tracks and lanes through woodland and farmland
Accommodation: one chambres d'hôtes;
one 3-star hotel; one 4-star hotel
Meals: dinner and breakfast each day, plus 2 picnics
Climate: mild temperatures, similar to the UK
Starting point: Auberge de l'Abbaye (3*), Le Bec Hellouin. An attractive and traditional inn with a half-timbered façade and flower-filled window boxes. Inside, the rooms, furnished with antiques, are full of character, while the atmospheric restaurant serves classic regional cuisine enriched with cream and calvados.
Day 1: today you can visit Le Bec Hellouin's historic Benedictine abbey and museum of automata (pay locally), and afterwards explore the attractive woodland paths of the Bec Valley on a circular walk that passes the Convent of St Françoise Romaine. (10km,
3hrs)
Accommodation: Auberge de l'Abbaye, as above.
Day 2: the longest of the three days, today's walk takes you through
varied countryside of farmland and woodland, alongside rivers and streams,
and past several small villages. There are some interesting features to
look out for along the route, such as lavoirs (wash houses), decorative
graves, a dovecote, and a couple of lovely churches. (17km, 5hrs)
Accommodation: La Pommeraie (chambres d'hôtes), St-Georges-du-Vièvre.
Though modern, this delightful chambres d'hôtes (guesthouse) has been
built in traditional style in the grounds of a manor house. You dine in
the nearby Hotel de France's cosy restaurant where you enjoy typical dishes
such as beef in cider or chicken with cream and tarragon.
Day 3: your final walk
once again leads through woodland and farmland. You pass through the village
of St Etienne l'Allier, whose church is worth visiting to see its 17th-century wooden carvings. Here, you can extend the walk by looping through
the pretty Véronne stream valley, or continue past the 16th-century
Chapelle St Firmin, built, unusually, of wood and plaster. (12km, 3.5hrs
or 19km, 5.5hrs)
Accommodation: Le Petit Coq au Champs (4*), Campigny. Refined
cuisine and a heated outdoor pool await you at this enchanting hotel,
a converted thatched Norman farm set in idyllic countryside.
