Trails around Fornalutx
The magnificent mountains of northern Mallorca rise abruptly out of the Mediterranean, surprising the visitor with their rugged beauty, exquisite biscuit-coloured villages, and immaculate citrus and olive groves which stretch as far as the eye can see. Criss-crossing the sierra is a network of scenic paths and ancient cobbled trails. With your hotelier as your guide, you will experience a real taste of everything these mountains have to offer on your weekend away, from limestone ridges and peaks, to deep blue lakes and lush, terraced valleys filled with delightful almond and citrus blossom. Spring comes early here; the air is crisp and clear, making the Tramuntana Sierra the perfect walking environment. The emphasis of this break is squarely on enjoyment, fine walks and good food in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.
Nights: 3
Grade: 2
Terrain: citrus groves, wooded valleys, mountain paths
Minimum/maximum numbers: 2 / 14
Meals: 3 breakfasts, 2 dinners, 2 lunches
Climate: this sunny Mediterranean island enjoys a warm and early spring, with average maximum temperatures of 14°C, 15°C and 17°C in January, February and March, respectively.
Base for the weekend: Ca’n Reus (2*), Fornalutx. Considered by many to be the prettiest of the Tramuntana Sierra’s villages, Fornalutx is a fitting base for your weekend. Your host, and experienced mountain walker, Sue Guthrie, welcomes you warmly to her beautiful country hotel, and will entertain you in high style as well as treating you to her legendary breakfasts. Lovingly converted from a typical Mallorcan house, Ca’n Reus offers seven attractive rooms, pleasant gardens, a panoramic terrace and superlative mountain views. A gastronomic ‘welcome dinner’ of four courses plus wine is included on your first night.
Saturday (12km): your first guided walk with Sue is an excellent introduction to the area; the route winds up through ancient olive groves and citrus terraces to the magnificent viewing point of Mirador Ses Barques, before heading down cobbled trails to the pretty, horseshoe-shaped Port de Sóller. After a leisurely lunch in the port (included), you take the century-old tram that trundles through colourful orchards to the town of Sóller. You have time to explore Sóller, its squares and pavement cafés before the 45-minute walk back to Fornalutx. In the evening, you are free to dine out in one of the village restaurants (pay locally).
Sunday (13km): starting with a short transfer to Lake Cuver, this superb and wonderfully varied route leads through tunnels (the heart of the island’s irrigation system) before skirting the Tossals Verds Massif, passing through some of the wildest and most unspoiled scenery on the island. Lunch is taken en route at an atmospheric mountain refuge (included). Back at Ca’n Reus, you share a typical tapas supper with Sue and your fellow guests.
Options to extend your break: why not add on extra nights at Ca’n Reus (£56pp/n)? We can provide route notes for some beautiful self-guided routes. Alternatively, you could choose to stay in the capital, Palma. This vibrant and cosmopolitan city boasts a superb old quarter, modernist architecture, pretty squares and an imposing cathedral looking out onto the sophisticated marina and the Mediterranean. There are also shops, boutiques and top-class restaurants to rival any major European city. We offer two excellently located hotels in the city. The Hotel Dalt Murada has been lovingly converted from the ancestral family home into a stylish 4-star hotel. Set around a fragrant courtyard in a privileged location in the heart of the old quarter, the hotel’s eight rooms boast every comfort. The Hotel El Born is a former 16th-century palace and now a pleasant, comfortable hotel in a peaceful location right on the edge of the old town. It has a pretty central courtyard where breakfast can be taken on fine days.
