The Amalfi Coast

Drawn by the bright Mediterranean sunshine and the dramatic fusion of mountains and sea, visitors have been coming to the Amalfi Coast since the days of the Grand Tour. West of Amalfi, mountains, coves and villages alternate to Punta Campanella, the peninsula’s westernmost point, which stretches out into the sea towards the island of Capri.

Nights: 4
Grade: 2
Terrain: mountains, woodland, high paths above the coast, some stone stairways
Accommodation: one 3-star hotel; one 4-star hotel
Meals: breakfast each day, dinner on 2 nights
Climate: this sunny region enjoys long, hot summers and mild winters. Average temperatures range from 14°C in April and November to 22°C in June and September and 25°C at the height of summer.

Path of the GodsStarting point: Buca di Bacco (4*), Positano. This is a high-quality hotel offering professional yet very friendly service. We include sea view rooms. Your stay is on a bed and breakfast basis, leaving you free to take your pick of the resort’s many seafood restaurants.

Day 1: we highly recommend that you catch a bus to Montepertuso (pay locally) and walk back to Positano along the truly awe-inspiring 'path of the gods' across the high, open mountainside, giving you the feeling of being on top of the world. (12km, 4hrs)

Accommodation: Buca di Bacco, as above.

PositanoDay 2: after a short transfer you enjoy a scenic walk across the inland hills, with far-reaching views in clear weather across the bay to Vesuvius. Your path leads through olive groves and orchards to reach Marina del Cantone. (10km, 3.5hrs)

Accommodation: Hotel delle Sirene (3*), Marina del Cantone. This friendly hotel is located right by the sea, with a seafront restaurant and its own beach for guests’ use. Marinella Caputo is a wonderful host and a great cook too – her antipasti are particularly delicious. Bedrooms at the front of the hotel enjoy sea views, while those at the back have a terrace or balcony.

Coastline near Marina del CantoneDay 3: today we recommend that you take the opportunity to visit the peninsula’s westernmost point, Punta Campanella, separated by just 3 miles of water from Capri. Both our suggested routes start with a bus ride to Termini (pay locally), after which you can choose from a relaxed 8-kilometre route that descends gently through the western foothills of Monte San Costanzo to the lighthouse, or a challenging 11-kilometre walk via the panoramic summit of Monte San Costanzo that descends steeply along the ridge to the headland. For a much easier day, from Marina del Cantone you can stroll around the nearby headland, past a Saracen watchtower, to the characteristic cove of Recommone, where you can have lunch at the cove’s restaurant (pay locally). Alternatively, you could join one of the boat trips along the coast organised by Marinella’s husband (pay locally) or walk the 15 kilometres to the famous Grand Tour resort of Sorrento, returning by bus (pay locally) once you have had a chance to stroll through the elegant streets.

Accommodation: Hotel delle Sirene, as above
