La Ferme du Vert, Wierre Effroy
This charming 3-star logis has been carefully converted from farm buildings
that date back to the Napoleonic era. The setting, in rolling countryside
on the edge of Wierre Effroy just 17 miles from Calais, is idyllic, while,
to quote one previous customer, the Bernard family is the epitome
of classic French friendliness. You enter through the courtyard,
a pleasant area full of flowers in summer and with a small duck pond.
Rooms: the bedrooms vary in décor and size (those with
a bath are larger than those with shower and hence carry a supplement) but
are all attractively furnished and most have beamed ceilings and views
over the courtyard. Those in the old hayloft are particularly lovely,
with high, sloping ceilings. Families can be accommodated in the Grand
Suite (supplement payable), which comprises two adjoining bedrooms and
a shared bathroom and sleeps up to five. All bedrooms have a TV and telephone.
Restaurant: the intimate restaurant, complete with a log fire, successfully
blends modern and rustic styles. It makes a lovely setting in which to
enjoy excellent country cooking. After dinner you can relax in the comfortable
lounge with its small bar.
Customer comments: the Ferme du Vert earns consistently high praise
from guests. Here are just two of the comments we have received
about the auberge:
Excellent in every respect, with a genuine and delightful atmosphere
created by the Bernard family and a friendly and well trained staff.
I am pleased to be able to tell you that we all thought Ferme
du Vert an exceptionally nice place in a wonderfully peaceful setting.
The food was excellent and all in all we thought the holiday was amazingly
good value.
Out and about: Wierre Effroy makes a good base for a weekend away;
whether you like beach walks, history, shopping, or sightseeing, there
are plenty of options all within a short drive. On the coast, Boulogne,
Frances most important fishing port, boasts a well preserved walled
upper town, with pretty, cobbled streets, while Le Touquet is an elegant,
if a little faded, seaside resort.
The most attractive stretch of coastline is that between Cap Gris Nez
and Cap Blanc Nez, where you can enjoy a pleasant walk or relax on Wissants
sandy beach. For birdwatchers, the Marquenterre bird sanctuary on the
Somme estuary offers the chance to spot a wide range of birdlife. Just
north of the Somme are a couple of very pretty valleys, the Course and
the Canche. The Authie Valley is also attractive, and it is here that
you will find the lovely Jardins de Valloires. The region has, of course,
witnessed many battles over the centuries, including those of Agincourt
and the Somme, and there are visitor centres and museums at several of
the battlefields that will appeal to history lovers.
For shopping and sightseeing, there are numerous attractive market towns,
or head to Lille, with its superb art museums, excellent restaurants,
beautiful architecture, and futuristic Euralille retail complex. If you
dont mind the longer drive into Belgium, Bruges and the lesser-known
but equally beautiful Ghent can both be visited in a day.
