The Basque Pyrenees
These green mountains, the last rugged peaks of the
Pyrenean chain before it disappears into the Atlantic,
promise rewarding walking and breathtaking views. They
form an impressive backdrop to one of Europe’s most
traditional - and most picturesque - regions, where
peaceful, whitewashed villages nestle in verdant valleys.
The Basque region has its own language, architecture and
cuisine, and its people are justly proud of their rich culture.
Green mountains and white villages
You enjoy four nights in the village of Ainhoa at the excellent 3-star Argi Eder, complete with an
outdoor pool, tennis court and excellent restaurant.
We provide notes for a number of walking
options within easy reach of the hotel - enjoy a stroll by the River Nivelle; take an 8km circuit from
the nearby picturesque village of Sare, or explore the foothills behind the
hotel to the Chapelle d’Arantze.
Head further afield by car to the
Col St Ignace where a funicular railway takes you to the summit of La
Rhune (900m) for panoramic
views and then descend on foot.
Head for the coast
You may choose to head to the
coast to visit the bustling towns of
Biarritz and Bayonne, or discover
the pretty fishing port of St Jeande-
Luz.
Alternatively, why not cross the nearby border into
Spain to visit Pamplona (190km) or take the back roads
through dramatic mountain scenery to San Sebastián (130km).
