Bruges
The Finest of Flemish Towns
Perfectly
preserved and criss-crossed with attractive waterways, mediaeval Bruges
is a gem, and a delight to visit in any season. Winter sees skaters skimming
along the frozen canals and the pretty shops and cafés glow with
warmth, while in summer months cafés spill out onto the pavements
and sunlit squares. A boat trip along the canals can provide an interesting
view of the city, but we prefer to explore the narrow streets on foot
to appreciate fully the architectural richness of the step-gabled buildings.
The 600-year-old City Hall, the Renaissance Old Recorders' House, and
the 17th-century Provost's House are among the most splendid. For a panoramic
view of the city, climb up to the belfry of the Church of Our Lady. Elsewhere,
an excellent variety of enticing shops - including numerous specialist
boutiques selling lace and deliciously rich handmade chocolates - vie
for attention with museums, galleries and churches, whose cultural highlights
include Flemish masters and a beautiful Michelangelo Madonna and Child.
Or while away an hour or so browsing the stalls of the twice-weekly market,
held on Saturdays and Wednesdays.
Moules frites & beer
The local seafood is delicious - mussels from around Zeebrugge and shrimps
from Ostend are particularly tasty. We have enjoyed some very good fish
dishes at T'Bezemtje. For really good moules frites, try the more
informal Breydel De Coninc (also known as Jan the Mussel Man!). Your meal
should, of course, be washed down with one of the famous Belgian beers.
There is a vast range to choose from, and a huge variety of differently-shaped
glasses to match. The Trappist beers tend to be quite strong, while the
white beers are lighter. For something a bit different, try one of the
fruit-flavoured beers - take your pick from passion fruit, raspberry and
cherry, among others.
Hotel Bryghia
We love the peaceful, canal-side location of this welcoming 3-star hotel.
This fine brick building offers a pleasant lounge and bar, while the 18
bedrooms are smart and well equipped. For better views and more space,
upgrade to one of the stylish rooms overlooking the canal. There is an underground car park near the hotel (pay locally). The short walk from the hotel to the splendour
of the Markt takes you through picturesque streets crammed with shops
of all descriptions interspersed with friendly cafés and restaurants.

Oud Huis de Peellaert
This is one of Bruges' newest hotels, opened in March 2004. It has been
converted from an impressive 19th-century building, once the home of the
Count of Peellaert, that is just 150 metres from the Markt. High ceilings,
chandeliers and large windows create a feeling of grandeur, and the 50
smart bedrooms offer all the comforts you would expect from a 4-star hotel.
Facilities include a cosy bar, a garden, a fitness room, a sauna and private
parking (pay locally).
