Arras
A characterful Flemish Town
The two focal points of Arras, 63 miles from Calais, are its two great
squares: the Grand'Place and the Place des Héros. Both are framed
by splendid 17th-century Flemish-style buildings. For a good introduction
to - and a superb overview of - the city, you can ascend the Flemish belfry
of the striking Gothic Hôtel de Ville in the Place des Héros,
while a tour of the underground tunnels (les boves), which were
created from the 10th century onwards by the quarrying of limestone underneath
the city, offers another, very different, perspective of the town. It
was in this labyrinth that the Arrageois sheltered during sieges, and
in World War I the British army launched an attack on the Germans from
the tunnels. Also worth a visit is the neo-classical cathedral and the
Musée des Beaux Arts, which boasts a collection of medieval sculptures
and also of arras, locally-made tapestries woven from fine wool,
silk and gold thread.
Ostel les Trois Luppars
Located in a 15th-century Gothic building, the oldest on the Grand'Place,
the 2-star Trois Luppars offers 42 simple but comfortable bedrooms which
were completely refurbished in autumn 2003. All bedrooms are equipped
with telephone, TV, safe and hairdryer. There is car parking in the municipal
car park opposite the hotel; pay locally. We include 2 night's bed and breakfast with dinner on one night at the town's most acclaimed restaurant, La Faisanderie.
Restaurant La Faisanderie
The location of this restaurant, where we include one dinner, is superb, in the atmospheric, vaulted cellars of a 17th-century house right on the Grand'Place, but La Faisanderie's real appeal is the Michelin-starred cuisine, quite simply the best you'll find in Arras.
