Captured on canvas by so many artists, Tuscany is a world of plentiful sunshine, pretty villages, great art, glorious scenery, delicious cuisine and world-famous wines. With influences from the Etruscans and Romans to the Renaissance, this incredible area of central Italy contains some of the greatest art in the world, including paintings, sculpture, frescoes and architectural wonders.

The great Italian Renaissance cities of Florence, Siena and Pisa are all within an hour’s drive (50-55km) and need no introduction. Of equal interest and intrigue are the great towers of San Gimignano, a wonderful Tuscan landmark, where you can wander down the quiet lanes north of Colle Val d’Elsa and discover some delightful viewpoints. Volterra is another absorbing town, set amid stark, yet dramatic, windy hills. It has a rich history, with substantial Etruscan and Roman remains which can be found in the town's two main museums.

However, this area is also famous for its beautiful countryside and the estate offers three easy waymarked walks from the apartments: one follows a stream to a small lake; another meanders through the estate's vineyards, and a third leads through pleasant shady woods and out onto the hills.

For a fun family holiday enjoying all that Tuscany has to offer, the large estate, where your apartment is located, makes a perfect base. With a sociable atmosphere and plenty to keep you amused, from tennis courts to trails through the olive groves, and from horse riding to mountain-bike hire (pay locally in all cases), it is wonderfully self-contained - there is even a bar, a restaurant and a mini-market selling groceries and the estate’s honey and olive oil.

The apartments are housed in a dozen or so attractively restored farmhouses that are scattered - often in pairs - across the gentle slopes of the hills. Simple and rustic in style, they have cool terracotta floor tiles, exposed stonework and wooden shutters that create stylish and relaxed interiors.
