Green rolling hills, dotted with medieval stone villages, hill-top castles and towers, give a distinct timelessness to the area that is enhanced by the feeling of being in ‘secret’ Italy, especially if you are visiting outside July and August. Enjoy scenic drives to historic cities such as Casale Monferrato, home to Italy’s most opulent synagogue; discover the wide boulevards and splendid Baroque architecture of graceful Turin; watch the horse races and medieval pageantry of Asti’s Palio festival in late September, but do not neglect the local vineyards! The Vellano family have been producing their own wines for four generations, producing 25,000 bottles annually. We include a wine-tasting at your hosts' winery, where the fine red Barbera and Grignolino wines are usually served with rare local cheeses, salamis and other local produce. The area is ideal for exploring on foot and mountain bikes are available for hire locally. Off-road cycling routes can be supplied on request and horse riding, tennis and fishing can be arranged in the villages nearby. The idyllic Tufo Stone Cottages make the perfect base from which to discover the region. Sensitively converted from a beautiful country house in a tranquil hamlet, these charming apartments feel like a home from home, furnished with antiques and decorated in warm, earthy colours. Please let us know if you would prefer to be in one of the apartments closest to the pool. If you don’t feel like cooking, why not treat yourselves to delicious risottos flavoured with truffles at one of the local restaurants, or try the superb on-site restaurant where you can dine by candlelight (pay locally; Saturdays only)? The apartments are as follows: Girasoli & Campanule (sleep 2-4): one-storey apartments (Girasoli is on the ground floor, Campanule on the first) with one twin bedroom (the beds can be pushed together to make a double), a shower room, and an open-plan living area with a kitchen and a 2-person sofa bed For those who prefer some independence, the owners also have a delightful two-person apartment, the Orangerie, with its own panoramic terrace and pool 10 kilometres away.
