Following the oak-lined meanders of this great river by car, on foot, on two wheels or even by canoe, you seemingly make a fresh discovery at every turn, be it an idyllic village such as Autoire, a turreted manor house surrounded by walnut trees, the vast underground caves at Padirac or the splendid medieval town of Sarlat. We provide route notes for the following walks to help you to get the most out of your holiday: Rocamadour Valley (10km, 3.5hrs): a scenic path leads down to the Alzou Gorge, which you traverse before returning to your starting point via several abandoned small mines. Alternatively, you can hire canoes and paddle down the river from Meyronne to Souillac and see the Dordogne from a whole new perspective. You can even take a miniature train that runs for over a mile, deep into the caves of Lacave, with their impressive array of lakes, stalactites and stalagmites. In a region in which so many sights vie for your attention, astonishing Rocamadour is not to be missed. Clinging to the cliff, it has drawn pilgrims to its chapels for centuries, and nowadays is a bustling village with a handful of shops and restaurants which make the most of the spectacular setting. A mere 20 minutes’ walk away from the bustle of Rocamadour you come to the peace and quiet of our properties, where you receive a very warm welcome from Monsieur Menot, with whom we have worked for many years. He also owns the neighbouring hotel and the pool will prove to be very tempting after a day of sightseeing or walking. Behind the handsome stone façades so typical of the region lies charming accommodation painted in earthy, neutral tones and complemented by original features. Choose either Le Métayer, a detached house, or one of the two delightful apartments, Marie Rose and Basilou, converted from a traditional old barn with a red-tiled roof. All three accommodate four people and comprise two bedrooms (one double, one twin), a well-appointed bathroom (Marie Rose has two), and a living-cum-dining room incorporating a well-equipped kitchen area.
