Rugged limestone peaks that plunge into the sea, tower above beautiful villages, whose cobbled streets are lined with houses of honey-coloured stone and pots overflowing with flowers. Among the prettiest are Fornalutx, a maze of winding alleyways; Valldemossa, a great favourite of composer Chopin; Sóller, with its elegant mansions and Gaudí-esque church; and hill-top Deià. Linking these small villages, and criss-crossing the sierra, is a network of paths and cobbled trails which invites you to explore on foot, rewarding you with breathtaking views of both mountains and sea. It is in the heart of this tranquil landscape that you will find the Apartamentos de Tramuntana, from which you can easily access as much - or as little - as you want. You can combine a visit to beautiful Valldemossa, and its famous Carthusian monastery, with a memorable walk across the slopes of Mount Teix (1,064 metres) which affords superb vistas of the coast in clear weather. Another option takes a classic Mediterranean route into a deep valley followed by a short ascent to a coastal path with glorious sea views. Or climb gently between pine-clad slopes to reach the L’Ofre Pass before a dramatic descent on the ancient cobbled pilgrims’ way through the spectacular Biniaraix Gorge. There are many other circuits and linear walks, for all levels of fitness and experience, through the rugged sierras and along this wonderful coast. Whether you plan to spend your week walking, visiting atmospheric villages, or exploring the northern coast, the tranquil location of the highly praised Apartamentos de Tramuntana in the heart of the sierra, 15 minutes’ drive from Palma, is hard to beat. Your host, María José, welcomes you to the agriturismo, which consists of a terrace of eight 1-bedroom and two 2-bedroom modern, but sympathetically designed, cottages set in the extensive grounds of a working farm that produces its own jam and honey. All are air-conditioned and beautifully decorated, with exposed stonework and wooden beams. Prices & travel 2008
