If you like walking, visiting medieval towns and exploring the quieter side of Italy, you will love the Le Marche region, situated on the Adriatic Coast of central Italy. Away from the Adriatic Coast, you will find one of the country’s most rural and traditional areas, where picturesque hills, hiding the handsome city of Ascoli Piceno, give way to the high peaks of the Monti Sibillini range, perhaps the most splendid mountains in the Apennine chain that forms Italy’s spine.

Such is the wild, unspoiled majesty of these mountains that they have been declared a National Park, and it is immensely rewarding to walk amid the hauntingly beautiful Sibillini landscape and visit the walled medieval villages, such as Norcia, that crown the ridges.

This excellent agriturismo (‘holiday farmhouse’), is located on slopes that overlook the valleys of the rivers Aso and Tenna and offers breathtaking views of the mountains and as far as the sea, making it a delightful base for a relaxing family holiday. Your welcoming host, Stefano Marziali, will rent bicycles to you (pay locally) and we provide you with walking notes so that you can explore the mystical Sibillini Mountains on two wheels or on foot before returning to the cottages, where loungers and parasols surround the shared pool.

There are also numerous horse riding stables in the region with courses for beginners and all-day trekking for more experienced riders. You will find climbing, pot-holing, delta plane and hang gliding clubs which offer an alternative way of seeing this wonderful landscape. Discover the ‘witches’ cave’ and a lake which turns red, reputedly with the blood of Caesar.

Unusually, given the rural setting of rolling farmland and wooded ridges, the two Barn Cottages that we offer have been restored in modern townhouse-style, but it is a contrast that succeeds. Each comfortable apartment occupies two storeys of the converted barn, enhancing the sense of space created by the large picture windows. The ground floor’s kitchen-cum-dining room leads out onto a terrace set with tables and chairs, while a double bedroom, bathroom and sitting room take up the first floor. There are shops close by in the charming medieval village of Montefalcone Appennino, so it is easy to cater for yourselves. However, rather than provide a welcome hamper on arrival, we include a dinner of fresh local produce in the estate’s restaurant on your first night, and you may well find yourselves returning on other nights (pay locally), so highly praised are Stefano’s hospitality and country cooking!

We provide route notes for the following walks:

Sybil of the Apennines (5hrs): this rewarding walk explores slopes steeped in legend, leading as it does along the top of the ridge between the Aso and Tenna rivers which affords enchanting views over the surrounding landscapes.
Fiastrone Gorge (5hrs): paths lead through the narrow Fiastrone Gorge beneath overhanging rocks with a distinctive red hue to the Friars' Cave, once home to a group of dissident Franciscan monks.
Tenna Valley: this popular route is one of the most attractive of the Sibillini National Park. It passes through a beautiful rocky canyon, then through beech woods and the high limestone walls of the Sibilla and Priora mountains.
Lake Pilato (6hrs): paths wind uphill through beech woods to reach Lake Pilato which, like the mountains that surround it, is steeped in legend.
