Named after the country’s highest mountain, the Triglav National Park in north-west Slovenia is characterised by deep ravines, green valleys, fast-flowing rivers and lush meadows, all framed by majestic peaks which soar to heights of over 2,000 metres.

One of the jewels of the Park is the glacial lake of Bohinj, an idyllic spot which deservedly attracts walkers, mountain bikers, fishing enthusiasts and canoeists, who come to enjoy the great outdoors.

Spend a week here and not only can you explore the Julian Alps and some of their natural wonders - the dramatic Mostnica Gorge, the impressive Slavica Waterfall, famous Lake Bled with its imposing castle and romantic island - but you can also visit the magnificent Soča Valley to the south, take a day trip to the cultured capital, Ljubljana, and experience the timelessness of the villages surrounding Lake Bohinj, the most traditional of which is Studor with its typical Slovenian hayracks.

We supply walk notes for several fine walks (some of them a short drive away) so that you can explore on foot:

Slap Savica (19km, 5hrs): a wonderful path leads along Lake Bohinj's northern shore to join a woodland trail to the magnificent 60-metre-high Savica Waterfall. To return to your base, you follow an old hunters’ trail along the lower wooded slopes close to the lake’s southern shore, or you could take a boat across the lake to shorten the route.
Mostnica Gorge (10km, 3hrs): the Mostnica Gorge is known for its erosion potholes, natural bridge and numerous waterfalls. After walking through the gorge you head northwards, crossing pastureland in the alpine valley of Voje, one of the quieter corners of the lower Bohinj Valley, to reach the stunning waterfall of Slap Mostnice.
Traditional Slovenia (9km, 3hrs): paths follow the winding river as it flows out of Lake Bohinj through rolling countryside. What makes the walk so fascinating is that you pass examples of the famous studor and double kozolec hayracks. You return to your starting point by bus.
Lake Bled & the Vintgar Gorge (14.5km, 4.5hrs): this is a scenic walk to the Vintgar Gorge (for which a small entrance fee is payable locally), which takes you along the shores of Lake Bled to panoramic Blejski Castle, then through a string of small villages towards another excellent viewpoint, and finally along a wooded trail to the gorge. Here, a series of boardwalks and bridges lead you spectacularly upstream along the entire length of the gorge. A gentle country trail then leads you back to Lake Bled.
Historic Radovljica (10km, 3hrs): another walk from Lake Bled wanders across the surrounding countryside to reach the delightful town of Radovljica. Enjoy a spot of lunch and sightseeing (the main street is lined with Gothic and Renaissance mansions) before catching the bus back.

Lake Bohinj is a place where you can escape the everyday world and, in the middle of this idyllic countryside, you will find the six apartments we have chosen in Milena’s traditional rural village house. Only a few kilometres from beautiful Lake Bohinj, the small village of Sredjna Vas has many pleasant paths that allow easy access to the surrounding lakes and hills. Your welcoming hosts, Milan and Milena, live on site and will be happy to prepare your breakfast on request (pay locally).

Your nearest shop is in the village but you will probably prefer to dine out most of the time - there are restaurants in the village as well as a wide choice of eateries on the eastern shore of the lake where you can enjoy an authentic taste of Slovenia.
