For fantastic swimming in crystal-clear waters, lazy days pottering around in a boat discovering some of the offshore islets, and enjoyable walks in rolling hills clad with maritime pines and groves of olives, the island of Korčula is hard to beat. Measuring barely 70 kilometres from its easternmost point to its western shoreline, it is a small island, and one that you can get to know well over the course of a week.

Tempting as the sea may be, it is worth tearing yourselves away from the coast to visit Korčula Town, one of the best preserved medieval towns in the Mediterranean, and to experience the tranquillity and timelessness of some of the other villages and their white stone churches.

To work up an appetite for dinner, hire your hosts’ boat and take to the sea, or make the most of the route notes we provide to enjoy some scenic walks across expanses of rosemary and through silver-green olive groves.

Mount Hum (12.5km, 4.5hrs): this very varied circular route leads across verdant slopes and along the rocky coastline, ascending to Mount Hum (376 metres) for fantastic views.
Coastal Views (14km, 4hrs or 18km, 6hrs): enjoy sweeping views over the coast as you follow pleasant trails lined by old dry-stone walls. If you wish to swim, you can extend the walk by continuing to Martina Bok, an undisturbed stretch of coastline on the north-west corner of the island.
Olive Groves (13.5km, 3.5hrs): paths wind through light woodland and olive groves above the coast, rewarding you with sea views and the chance to bathe at a secluded beach.
Saknja Rat Nature Reserve (6km, 2hrs):: occupying the south-west corner of the island, the nature reserve boasts several several idyllic coves and shingle beaches, some of which you visit on our walk.

The quietest part of the island is the south-west corner, and it is here, 7 kilometres to the west of authentic Vela Luka and its shops and restaurants, that the Silver Stone Apartments are located, surrounded by gardens scented with rosemary and lavender and shaded by maritime pines.

The position - just 40 metres from the shoreline of large, rounded rocks - is superb, and guests have exclusive use of the section of stony beach that belongs to the apricot-coloured house.
