A week here can be as varied as you want it to be - spend one day visiting villages such as Castiglione del Lago and Panicale, both guarded by castles, and the next on a boat trip (pay locally) to one of Lake Trasimeno’s picturesque islands. Not to be missed are excursions to the celebrated Basilica of St Francis in Assisi or to the fairy-tale town of Gubbio. Round off the week with a visit to the art galleries of nearby Perugia and seek out the works of the Renaissance artist Perugino to see for yourselves how little has changed over the centuries in this landscape of dark cypresses, fortified villages and misty hills, immortalised in his paintings. We provide notes for a couple of walks through this rolling scenery: Panicale & Perugino (18km, 5hrs): this is a long but easy circuit from Panicale through beautiful oak woods and along the crest of gently rolling hills boasting good views over Lake Trasimeno. Your target is the hamlet of Mongiovino, which overlooks a 16th-century sanctuary. On your return to Panicale,
be sure to visit the village's fresco by Perugino, The Martyrdom of St Sebastian. Nestling in the heart of this romantic landscape, is the medieval hill-top town of Castel Rigone, located some 5 kilometres east of Lake Trasimeno, and making an ideal base from which to explore both northern Umbria and some of the magnificent villages of nearby Tuscany. Within a converted 19th-century dwelling in the town are a romantic two-person open-plan studio with a canopied bed, two one-bedroom apartments (one has a twin bedroom, the other a double) and one two-bedroom apartment with one double and one twin bedroom. All are decorated in a simple but elegant style, with comfortable furnishings complemented by tiled floors and beamed ceilings which lend character. They all have a shower room (the larger apartment has two), a well-equipped kitchen corner, a living room and, with the exception of the studio, an outdoor seating area. Umbria is a very gastronomic region and it is well worth dining out at some of the local restaurants, the nearest of which is only a five-minute stroll away, so as to sample the excellent regional cuisine featuring local delicacies, such as lake fish, truffles and saffron.
