Particularly beautiful and relatively undiscovered, the Minervois wine region is gently rolling countryside and makes a great base from which to explore the coast, hills and the wonderful Canal du Midi. Drive east or south-east and you soon reach the coast with its sandy beaches and large lagoons frequented by flamingos; due west are the perfect turrets and crenellations of the fairy-tale town of Carcassonne; head south-west and you enter the Corbières, a mysterious region of rugged beauty made all the more dramatic by the striking and seemingly inaccessible fortresses in which the doomed Cathar heretics sought refuge from persecution in the Middle Ages. Add to all this the meandering, tree-lined Canal du Midi, whose towpaths offer some great walking and cycling, and you have all the ingredients for a fascinating holiday. Owned by welcoming British couple Sasha and Tim Hazael, the beautiful Manor House Cottages are located some 16 kilometres north-west of Narbonne, a short stroll from the local village and the nearest shops. They have been converted from former winery buildings and barns and are set, as their name suggests, in the grounds of a manor house which in turn is surrounded by rolling countryside. Of the estate’s wide range of accommodation, we offer four cottages and the Château Suite, all decorated to a very high standard, with a shower room, and a living-cum-dining room incorporating a well-equipped kitchen area. The two terraced Regisseur’s Cottages (one with a double bedroom, the other with two) stand in the courtyard by the orchards. As there is an internal door between the two, parties of six can rent them both together. Adjoining them, the Chauffeur’s Cottage sleeps four in two double bedrooms, as does the Monet House, a wonderful retreat set among the trees, complete with an additional lounge. The Château Suite occupies the ground floor of the manor house, offering a double bedroom plus a mezzanine level with twin beds above the living area - ideal for families. Whichever you choose, you benefit from your own patio and barbecue. The excellent shared facilities include a large pool (usually open from May to September), a trampoline, badminton and table tennis, and you can take advantage of the manor house’s small restaurant (pay locally) for a delicious taste of south-west France. With easy access to an amazing array of activities and sports, this site makes an ideal base for an active family holiday. For water-sports enthusiasts, canoeing and kayaking are available only 40 minutes’ drive away while white-water rafting can be undertaken in the Pyrenees only 90 minutes away. For a quieter time on the water, why not relax and enjoy a canal boat trip along the Canal du Midi? We also provide route notes for three walks in the local area to help you to get the most out of your holiday: Canal du Midi (10.5km, 4hrs): this is a fascinating introduction to the Canal du Midi, passing a viewpoint from which you can see the Pyrenees in clear weather, a winery where you can pause for a tasting, and an intriguing village with museums devoted to hats as well as books and old comics.
