There is an undeniable thrill to exploring beautiful La Palma, land of dramatic volcanoes, tropical forests and beaches of fine black sand. The differences between the lush, tree-clad north and the starker, volcanic south of the island are striking, and the barrancos (ravines) which have been carved into the landscape make for such dramatic scenery that you never know what to expect as you round the next bend. This is an island to be discovered at leisure. With a week in a self-catering cottage and an included hire car, you can do just this, falling easily into the gentle rhythms of this friendly, laid-back island and taking things very much at your own pace.

La Palma is a walker’s paradise, and we provide notes for routes in different corners of the island and for all levels so that you can explore on foot, wherever your cottage is located, whether you want a short stroll or a full day’s hike on the peaks. It is also possible to join guided excursions into the huge forested crater of the Caldera de Taburiente which dominates the island; again, we provide information on these in our documentation (pay locally). The routes we offer are:

In the Caldera de Taburiente (2.5km, 1.5hrs): this easy walk explores a huge plug of rock in the middle of the Caldera, offering astonishing views to the rim of the crater some 1,000 metres above, and down to the bottom of the ravines and canyons some 1,000 metres below.
Pico Birigoyo (3.5km, 1.5hrs): ascend 350 metres to one of the highest volcanic cones on the island (1,800 metres) for a spectacular 360-degree panorama.
Pico de la Nieve (3km, 1.5hrs): this strenuous route rises to the rim of the Caldera de Taburiente at 2,300 metres, rewarding your efforts with incredible views 2,000 metres down into the Caldera and across the ocean towards Mount Teide on neighbouring Tenerife.
Rainforest of the Barranco de la Galga (6km, 2.5hrs): explore one of the island’s lesser-known ravines, where paths wind through subtropical vegetation.
Coladas de San Juan (7km, 3hrs): paths wind uphill through old vineyards and terraces then cross a lava flow created by the 1949 eruption of Volcán San Juan.
Faro de Fuencaliente (7km, 4.5hrs): featuring an ascent and descent of 600 metres, this route descends to the Fuencaliente lighthouse on the tip of the island via the cone of the youngest volcano, Teneguía. In warm weather you can enjoy a dip in the sea before returning to your car through old vineyards.
Los Tilos Biosphere Reserve (10.5km, 4.5hrs): discover the rainforest of Los Tilos, a Unesco-protected reserve, on a fascinating walk that also offers wonderful views into deep gorges.
Montes de la Luna (12km, 4.5hrs): a varied route which reveals forests of Canary pines, dramatic lava fields and the expanses of black sand which lie at the foot of Volcán Martín. If you are feeling energetic, you can detour to the peaks of Mount Fuego (‘Fire Mountain’) and Volcán Martín.

The cottages

We have chosen a selection of delightful self-catering cottages across the island, all of them converted from buildings at least fifty years old that enjoy marvellous views. Although individually owned and varying in size, the simply but attractively decorated cottages and apartments are all furnished and equipped to the same comfortable standards, and all boast a terrace or garden in which to sit out and relax. Located in small villages and hamlets, they offer a glimpse of life on the Canary Islands, and are all typically Canarian in style, with curving pan-tiled roofs, brightly painted façades, beamed ceilings, ceramic floor tiles and dark wooden furniture that contrasts with the whitewashed walls. Which cottage we book for you will depend on availability and the size of your party. Another cottage, Casa Carlota, is available as an upgrade.
