This long, thin island is verdant and undulating, with an amazing indented rocky coastline, hiding plenty of small secluded coves and quiet pebble beaches, just waiting to be discovered and explored. The traditional way of life involves fishing on the coast, and the production of white wine and olive oil inland. Local liqueurs include travarica (herb brandy) and slijvovica (plum brandy) if you’re feeling adventurous. For such a relatively small island, there is a surprising amount of things to see and do - visit the ‘capital’, Korčula Town, where you can stroll through the atmospheric medieval streets; take a boat trip to one of the tiny islands that lie just off Korčula’s shores; explore the western town of Vela Luka with its white stone churches and medieval houses; or follow our walking notes and strike out along inviting paths that reward you with sweeping views of the coast and surrounding islands. We provide route notes for the following walks, all easily accessed by car: Mount Hum (12.5km, 4.5hrs): this very varied circular route leads across verdant slopes and along the rocky coastline, ascending to Mount Hum (376 metres) for fantastic views. Hope’s and Maria’s Houses make good bases for exploring all this. They are located in the west, just north of Vela Luka, but, given Korčula’s size, you can easily discover the entire island from here. Reached by narrow roads which wind above the coast, the two houses each occupy a quiet spot and are surrounded by scented gardens planted with rosemary bushes and shaded by maritime pines. With the rocky shoreline so close - no more than 60 metres away from either house - the views are excellent, and you can be swimming in the warm waters within just a minute or so of leaving your apartment. The standard of accommodation in both houses is very similar, the décor simple but homely. Which you stay in depends on the size of your party and how many bedrooms you require - between them, the two houses have five apartments sleeping between two and eight in one, two or three bedrooms. All have a bath or shower room, a living-cum-dining room that includes a sofa bed and a well-equipped kitchen, and a balcony and/or terrace with access to a barbecue for alfresco meals. In addition, Hope’s House also offers a brightly coloured open-plan studio for two people, again complete with a balcony. Prices & travel 2008
