Framed to the north by the Sierra Nevada, mainland Spain’s highest mountain range, the fertile valleys of the Alpujarras are full of surprises and, as such, are a delight to explore by car or on foot.

The scenery ranges from steep-sided gorges to orange groves, and from bubbling streams to expanses of cacti, and if you tire of this, then the beaches of the Costa Tropical and the magical city of Granada with its Alhambra palace, one of the jewels of European architectural heritage, are only an hour’s drive away.

The last stronghold of the Moors, the valleys of Las Alpujarras have seemingly been untouched by the passage of time. Unique to this area are the flat-roofed Moorish houses with their very distinctive tall chimneys. Discover the extraordinarily varied scenery as you follow scenic paths through the mountains. The mighty peaks of the Sierra Nevada are always close, their snow-capped summits adding extra drama to the scenery in the first part of the season. We provide route notes for three circular walks of moderate difficulty, the starting points of which are easily accessible by car:

Five Villages of the Taja (9km, 4hrs or 15km, 6.5hrs): the Taja is a lush, bowl-shaped valley dotted with springs. Our route crosses ancient terraces, passing old threshing floors and ruined mills, then descends to an abandoned mill on the banks of the River Trevélez. From here, you walk along the valley before rising steadily back to your starting point. To extend the walk, you can cross the river and ascend the river cliff via a stairway-like mule track. Though the ascent is steep, your efforts are rewarded with a new perspective of the Sierra Nevada and sweeping views of the Taja.
Cerro Gordo (12km, 5hrs): a superb but relatively strenuous route that crosses the flanks of the Cerro Gordo (2,044 metres), rewarding you with thrilling views.
The Río Grande (10km, 4hrs): walk along the pretty banks of the Río Grande ('Big River') to a perfect picnic spot by an abandoned mill at the Junto de los Ríos ('The Meeting of the Rivers'), where the Río Grande meets the Río Chico ('Little River').

Such astonishing scenery is the setting for the Finca de Alpujarras, an elegant mountain retreat reached via a winding track some 1,450 metres above sea level from where it is possible to see the Mediterranean and, on a clear day, the mountains of Morocco. Nestling beneath Mulhacén, the highest mountain on mainland Spain, this secluded location affords incredible views, matched only by the outstanding hospitality of your hosts.

Ludet and Maïte have decorated each of their five top quality apartments individually in traditional Alpujarran style with distinct Moorish influences and exquisite attention to detail. Surrounded by fabulous gardens, these properties make the perfect place to get away from it all.
