Warmed by the southern sun, this deeply traditional region of south-west France is rich and fertile, a colourful patchwork of orchards, vineyards and fields of corn and sunflowers. Dotted with medieval towns, handsome châteaux and delightful churches, this is the heart of rural France, and life here plays to a slower rhythm.

Take your time to discover the region’s many treasures, among them the magnificent abbey at Moissac, and lively markets. Whatever else you do, make sure you don’t miss the surrounding villages’ nocturnal markets which are held in the early evenings in the market square during the summer months. Local farmers and growers set up tempting stalls filled to overflowing with local produce and delicacies. Many of them will also use this fresh produce to create succulent dishes and meals so that you can dine out (pay locally) in the heart of this traditional bustling market and enjoy a truly unique and memorable gastronomic holiday experience.

Drive a little further afield and you can reach the Dordogne, the picturesque Lot Valley, the wine town of Cahors, and even the foothills of the Pyrenees.

Set amid alluring scenery, the Farmstead’s great attractions are the sweeping views and the warm hospitality of English-speaking Sylvie Orliac, who will help you make the most of your stay. The local tourist office has prepared a wealth of interesting walks in the area, and we provide translated versions of three of these in your documentation:

Walk 1 (11.5km, 3.5hrs): a pleasant walk that leads directly from the estate, through fields and orchards, and past several small villages and churches.
Walk 2 (10km, 3hrs): the highlight of this walk is Clermont-Dessous, a pretty village with a 12th-century church and the ruins of an old château.
Walk 3 (9km, 2.5hrs): offering another glimpse of pastoral France, this walk follows part of the old pilgrims' way to Santiago de Compostela.

For something different, Sylvie can arrange horse riding for experienced riders, or you can hire bikes in Agen - the evocative undulating landscape is perfect cycling terrain, and again we provide suggestions for two routes in your documentation.

It was Sylvie who converted the rustic farm workers’ cottages and stables in the grounds of her family’s 16th-century manor house 15 kilometres west of bustling Agen. Nowadays, they offer simple but comfortable accommodation suitable for families and couples alike in La Bergerie (with two bedrooms), and La Volière and Le Pigeonnier (both with three bedrooms).

Even if you decide to self-cater rather than eating out (bread and croissants are delivered every morning, and you can purchase milk and fruit from local farmers), we highly recommend joining other guests for Sylvie’s weekly dinner (pay locally), a very sociable affair with regional delicacies and wine included.
