Here, at the end of its languorous journey across northern Spain, the mighty River Ebro has created a vast wetland area that is home to over 300 species of bird. This patchwork of lagoons, salt pans, marshes, rice fields, sand dunes and virgin beaches is criss-crossed by canals and the flat terrain makes for fantastic cycling. This is the most important wetland in Spain and the changing colours of the rice - from green to gold - mark the different seasons, as do the visiting birds, which include large numbers of flamingos. To ring the changes, head north along the coast to the Roman city of Tarragona, explore the mysterious Els Ports Mountains to the south-west which hide the 16th-century house in Horta de Sant Joan where Picasso lived and worked for a short time (pay entrance fee locally), or visit the medieval towns of Tortosa and Morella, both topped by ancient castles. Closer to home, you can visit nearby Deltebre and the Eco Museum, or take the ferry along the Ebro to the sea so that you can see its journey's end. We provide route notes for two long but gentle cycle rides (both grade 1-2): El Fangar Bay (46km): this route explores the northern part of the delta, including the bay of El Fangar, where there are spectacular, ever-changing
sand dunes that shelter a wide variety of wading birds and other wildlife.
The Delta Cottages, former fishermen’s homes, are located amid rice fields and lagoons right at the heart of the delta - perfect for exploring and just 5 kilometres from the nearest beach. Your hosts, Pepita and Susana Gómez, have been very careful to preserve the original character of these rustic cottages, or barracas, and, with their thatched roofs and pisé (rammed earth) walls, they are totally in harmony with their tranquil surroundings. The simple interiors of the barracas are spacious, their walls adorned with old tools and other implements. The four cottages are as follows: Barraca Salvador: 2 bedrooms (1 double, 1 twin), 1 shower room If you do not wish to cook, you will probably find yourselves heading to one of the restaurants in Deltebre, a kilometre away. We will be happy to pre-book bike hire for you (approximately £15 per person per day), and you can arrange fishing and other watersports locally through your hosts. Prices & travel 2008
