Spend a week or two on Spain’s north coast and you will understand why it is known as the Costa Verde (‘Green Coast’). Here, lush hills tumble down from the high mountains of the Picos de Europa to a rugged coastline characterised by beaches of virgin sand, tranquil coves, prehistoric caves and grassy cliffs.

A string of timeless fishing villages such as Lastres and Tazones runs along the Atlantic shoreline, perfect for afternoon strolls after lengthy lunches of delicious seafood - hake, monkfish, tuna, crab, lobster - accompanied by a glass or two of cider produced from the apples which grow so abundantly in the region’s ubiquitous orchards.

Just inland from such villages, lies Villaviciosa with its delightful medieval quarter and Wednesday market and, beyond this, quintessential green hills and the Asturian capital, Oviedo, dominated by its splendid Gothic cathedral.

Asturias is an area that invites discovery on foot and we supply notes for two walking routes, the starting points of which are reached by car:

The Cares Gorge (grade 2, up to 22km, 6hrs): this is a classic walk along the spectacular Cares Gorge, also known as the Divine Gorge, surrounded by towering, craggy limestone peaks. At first the path remains high above the river, but the further you walk along the gorge, the closer you get to the water. If you walk all the way to Caín before turning back, the gorge opens up to reveal an unrivalled view of the jagged peaks at the heart of the Picos de Europa National Park.
Lakes Enol & Ercina (grade 1, 5.5km, 2hrs): you can combine this gentle walk with a visit to Covadonga – the most famous of the Picos de Europa National Park's many highlights – where the Christian Reconquest of Spain began when King Pelayo defeated the Moorish army in a battle in 722. Nowadays there is an important sanctuary at the site. Above Covadonga are two lakes, Enol and Ercina. Our short circular walk skirts the shores of both amid spectacular mountain scenery.

Your charming host, Carmen, will be pleased to provide you with further suggestions for scenic walking routes or to help you arrange canoe hire. Located some 4 kilometres from Villaviciosa, the sophisticated Costa Verde Cottages make great bases from which to explore Asturias' many delights.

There are four properties to choose from:
A 4-bedroom house (sleeps 8): in addition to the four bedrooms there are three bathrooms, a living-cum-dining room, and a kitchenette equipped with a 2-ring hob, fridge-freezer, washing machine and a microwave with grill. Outside there is a veranda set with a table, chairs and a small barbecue.
Two 2-bedroom semi-detached houses (sleep 4): these properties comprise two bedrooms, a bathroom, a lounge with a fireplace, a dining-kitchen complete with a 4-ring hob, a fridge-freezer and a microwave. Each has its own garden or terrace with seating. They share laundry facilities.
A larger 2-bedroom semi-detached house (sleeps 4-6): in addition to two bedrooms (both of which can each take an extra bed), there are two bathrooms, a lounge with a fireplace, and a spacious dining-kitchen equipped with a 4-ring hob, microwave, oven, fridge-freezer, washing machine and dishwasher. Outside it offers a veranda and private garden complete with table and chairs.
Whichever you opt for, you will find the property to be spacious and stylish, with great attention to detail evident in both the furniture and the décor, which is complemented by wooden beams and polished wooden floors.

If you don’t feel like cooking for yourselves, you can take breakfast at Carmen’s small on-site restaurant (not available for dinner) or order delicious meals to be delivered to your home (pay locally in both cases), for a taste of outstanding Asturian cuisine and perhaps the estate’s own delicious cider.
