Almeria
Enjoy the beaches more or less to yourselves

The coast of Almería, one of the most remote stretches of the Mediterranean, is a perfect get-away-from-it-all winter retreat amid the red hills and silent valleys of the Cabo de Gata Natural Park. This is the southernmost and driest corner of Europe – the lighthouse at Cape Gata lies further south than the northernmost tip of Tunisia! – and is an area of stark natural beauty. Inland, date palm oases stand out against the bare hills whose tranquil valleys hide abandoned farmsteads and ancient waterwheels. On the coast, the contrast is even more dramatic: white beaches backed by carpets of sea lavender are interspersed with ancient pirate coves, and the Natural Park extends almost a mile out into the crystal-clear azure water. You can see fish swimming in shoals and colonies of sea urchins clinging to the rocks. It is an area that lends itself perfectly to quiet exploration on foot.

Near Rodalquilar
The abandoned settlement at Rodalquilar

We give detailed notes for four grade-1 and grade-2 walks, one from the door of your apartment and three that can be accessed with your hire car:

Cliff-top paths (11km, 4h): a scenic cliff-top walk starting from your base takes you to a delightfully secluded cove, before turning inland to follow the old muleteers' route back to Las Negras.
Towers & coves (12km, 4h): paths rise gradually from Rodalquilar to an 18th-century watchtower for magnificent views that stretch for miles along the coast in clear weather. You then descend to a secluded pebbly cove, ideal for a swim before retracing your steps back to Rodalquilar, where it is worth taking time to visit the abandoned gold mine and fascinating miners' settlement – now something of a ghost town.
Lorca’s landscapes (17km, 6.5h): this walk also starts in Rodalquilar, butheads through Arizona-like landscapes dotted with cactus-like Agaves Americanas, taking in Cortijo el Fraile, scene of the tragic real-life events that inspired Lorca's Blood Wedding.
Beaches & dunes (14km, 5h): from nearby San José, paths wind inland through a quiet cultivated valley before turning back towards the coast and returning to San José via the beautiful beaches of Mónsul and Los Genoveses. With its strange volcanic rock formations and vast, wind-rippled sand-dunes, the former was the setting for scenes from the film Lawrence of Arabia.

Spend the rest of your time strolling along some of the nearby beaches, exploring the timeless whitewashed fishing villages scattered along the coastline, or bird-spotting around the salt pans near Cape Gata where flocks of up to 2,000 flamingos can sometimes be seen during the autumn and spring migrations. You could also visit the provincial capital, Almería, a little-discovered port boasting a huge Moorish fortress and a fortified Gothic cathedral.

The apartments

Located in the heart of the Park, the pretty fishing village of Las Negras is named after the huge black rocky outcrop that dominates the nearby coast. It is on a quiet hillside just a ten-minute walk from the village and beach that the apartments are set. There are six one-bedroom apartments (with a double bed), plus a seventh with a second bedroom with bunk beds (suitable for children). Recently built, all the apartments boast stylishly furnished living-cum-dining rooms with seaward facing balconies, together with compact but well-equipped shower rooms and kitchens. If you don’t wish to cook for yourselves, you can dine at the highly regarded restaurant on site (closed Sun-Tue; pay locally) whose chef puts an imaginative twist on classic Spanish cuisine. A large swimming pool which is usually open most of the year, weather permitting, is shared by the apartments.
