Hills coated with olive groves, vineyards, rosemary and woods of cork oaks stretch towards the coastline, where rocky coves alternate with sandy bays, and natural harbours shelter villages of whitewashed houses. Further west, the volcanic hills of the Garrotxa area also benefit from the mild Mediterranean climate, their conical forms hiding pretty villages and Romanesque churches. You can also drive over the nearby border through the Pyrenees into France where you discover yet another landscape: that of the Corbières, a mysterious region steeped in history where crumbling fortresses crown the craggy ridges. Perfect for leisurely exploration, these areas make fantastic walking country, and we provide walking routes for the Garrotxa and the coast, which you can access using your hire car: The Hermitage (5km, 1.5hrs): this easy circular stroll leads to an idyllic hermitage from peaceful Lake Boadella. The lake makes an ideal picnic spot (you can enjoy a swim afterwards) and also boasts watersports such as water skiing and canoeing.
Nestling on a wooded hillside close to the border, two hours north of Barcelona, you will find your accommodation, a small group of exceptional medieval farmhouse apartments, ideally located for exploring all the above and more. The setting feels marvellously remote with impressive views - on a clear day, you can see as far as the Mediterranean. If you choose to eat in, the nearest shops are 7 kilometres away in the small town of Agullana though there are a couple of simple, country restaurants in the nearby medieval village of La Vajol. On arrival you are greeted warmly by your friendly hosts before being shown to your holiday home. The five lovingly converted apartments are entirely in harmony with the handsome stone façade of this 17th-century farmhouse, having retained many original features such as exposed stonework and beamed ceilings. Four of the five properties are on two levels, enhancing the sense of space, plus you can also relax in the communal library-cum-drawing room, the focal point of which is the large fireplace.
