The southern coastline of Sardinia is lined with myriad pristine sandy beaches, the jewel in the crown being that at Chia, recently voted the best in Europe (by the Daily Telegraph) for its ‘ towering dunes and crystalline waters flanked by juniper trees’. More Caribbean than Mediterranean, the white sands and translucent turquoise seas invite leisurely exploration and provide the perfect place to stop and spend a peaceful and relaxing day. Inland, the hills and rugged mountains give a wealth of opportunities for discovering secluded corners from where panoramic views open out in every direction.
The coastal plain here is also perfect for cycling and we supply notes for a gentle local discovery to complement your included cycle hire. On another day, drive across the causeway onto the picturesque island of San Antioco and head north to the small port of Calasetta. From here, it is possible to take the ferry towards the smaller island of San Pietro, where the atmosphere and culture is definitely influenced by the Ligurian fishermen who settled here centuries ago on their retreat from an island off Tunisia. If you get this far, don’t miss the Capo Sandalo nature reserve where, amongst others, nests of peregrine falcon are protected .
Reminders of past invasions and conquests are ever-present in the landscape, from traces of the ancient Phoenician city of Bithia at Chia and the magnificent Roman villa and amphitheatre at Nora, to the pre-historic ruins of the mysterious nuraghi that are ever-present in the landscape, especially around Barumini north of Cagliari.
A short distance down the coast, on the road to Chia, is Pula, and it is here, in this charming small town, that you will find the Verbena Apartments, consisting of 1- and 2-bedroom stylishly-furnished apartments either on the ground or first floor.
Set in the grounds of a luxury hotel around a subtropical palm grove, lawns and a large swimming pool, the modern, light and airy apartments have full use of the hotel’s facilities, and yet maintain an air of privacy and seclusion in their own right. It is a short walk into the village where you can sample traditional cuisine at one of several restaurants or you can dine at the hotel - or even order from the day’s menu (pay locally in both cases) to take back and enjoy on your own private terrace.
