Spectacular walking rewards with stunning views

In northernmost Italy, towering peaks over 3,000 metres high stand sentinel along the border with Austria while icy glaciers spill down into the valleys below. The Schnalstal is one such idyllic, German-speaking valley in which lush meadows and dense pine woods surround picturesque villages with their pretty wooden churches. The area contains much of cultural interest, from the 14th-century cloisters in the village of Karthaus and the elegant spa town of Meran to the various museums devoted to Ötzi, the Copper Age man found preserved in the ice nearby.

The elegant Rose Apartments

However, this is also a place for enjoying the outdoor life. Well-organised and waymarked paths beckon you onto the slopes, mountain-bike trails invite you to explore on two wheels, and the year-round downhill skiing for beginners and intermediates on the Schnalstaler Glacier is too rare an opportunity to be missed. We provide route notes for the following walks:

Val Senales (9km, 3h): this rewarding walk follows part of the Meran High Path, a panoramic route which extends right across the southern slopes of the Texelgruppe National Park. Walking at an altitude of 1,250-1,500 metres, you enjoy magnificent views into the valleys and across the high mountains. You return to your starting point by bus.
Above Bozen (19km, 6h): this is perhaps one of the most panoramic walks in the area. From Bozen, you take a cable car (pay locally) to the glorious uplands of Jenesien, a village nestling among meadows and alpine forests. The route leads past typical old alpine farmsteads across a wide-open plateau with grand views of the mountains.
The Earth Pyramids: another worthwhile walk on the slopes above Bozen takes you to the so-called earth pyramids, a strange natural phenomenon.

Wonderful Alpine walking

The tranquil Schnalstal Valley is the magnificent setting for the Rose Apartments, comprising eight apartments, all simply, but attractively, decorated in typical Alpine style, with wooden floors, warm-coloured fabrics and cedar furniture complementing the white walls to create a cosy feel. The smallest, an open-plan studio, sleeps two to four. For larger parties, choose from a five-person apartment with one double and one single bedroom or a six-person apartment with two bedrooms (either doubles or twins).

A tidy landscape of neat meadows, chalets and forests

What makes these apartments memorable is the hospitality of friendly owners, Paul and Steffi Grüner whose hotel is just three minutes’ walk away. We include dinner there on your first night so that you can meet your hosts and sample traditional Tyrolean cuisine that is frequently praised by guests. In fact, it is so good that you may well find yourselves returning on subsequent nights (pay locally). Feel free to seek Paul and Steffi’s advice throughout the week if you need any recommendations in regard to walks from the village or other excursions in this most scenic of valleys.

Enjoy a Tyrolean dinner on your first night at the owners' hotel
