Cloaked by immaculate vineyards and crowned by idyllic hill-top villages, the rolling Chianti Hills lie between the great Renaissance cities of Florence and Siena to the north and south, with their respective architectural gems, and the historic hill-top towns of San Gimignano and Arezzo to the west and east.
Take a leisurely drive or cycle ride along the designated wine trails and you will discover medieval villages steeped in the traditions of wine-making where you can pause to sample their full-bodied reds. Don’t miss Greve-in-Chianti, home to one of the region’s biggest wine fairs every September; historic Radda-in-Chianti, centred on the shield-studded Palazzo Comunale; and Castellina-in-Chianti with its ancient fortress, walls and arcaded walkway. Alternatively, you are certain to want to visit Arezzo, only 25 kilometres away, one of the wealthiest cities in Tuscany, and which boasts some wonderful Roman remains, including an amphitheatre, and a good archaeological museum. The 13th-century church of San Francesco contains masterpieces by 15th-century artist Piero della Francesca.
We offer route notes for two easy and enjoyable walking circuits - both a short drive away - on good tracks and trails: Around Radda-in-Chianti (12km, 4h): starting and finishing in this atmospheric town, our circular route explores the surrounding countryside, an undulating patchwork of extensive vineyards, woods, ancient churches and medieval castles.
The archetypal Tuscan scenery is the setting for the genial Giovanni Toscano’s estate, ideally located between Siena and Arezzo and only 50 minutes’ drive from Florence. The main farmhouse building is in the classic Tuscan style, complete with terracotta tiles and a handsome arched portico on the first floor. There are eleven high-quality apartments, mostly in the main house and all carefully restored to retain original features.
Breakfasts and dinners of traditional Tuscan fare are available at the on-site wine bar, which also offers tastings of the estate’s wine (pay locally in all cases). A variety of different restaurants are available only 8 kilometres away. Other facilities include a fishing lake, plus mountain-bike hire if you wish to work up an appetite for dinner!
