Sardinia is rich and diverse, geographically, historically and culturally. The landscape ranges from rugged volcanic mountains to dense woodland, lush meadows and a coast of hidden coves and expansive dunes and beaches. Ancient stone nuraghi towers and Roman remains can be found throughout the interior while medieval watchtowers stand sentinel along the clifftops. The traditional cuisine is robust and flavoursome, with such specialities as the traditional porcheddu or suckling pig; malloreddus (hand-made, gnocchi-like pasta), pane carasau (or music paper, a thin crispy bread) and fine cheeses that include the local pecorino.
Surrounded by water on three sides, the historic city of Alghero is delightful, and its Spanish influences are plain to see in its architecture, set within thick fortress walls, interrupted only by imposing towers. Indeed, Catalan is still spoken here, a reminder of past conquests. The narrow cobbled streets are lined with shops, while cafés and restaurants can be found around the many small piazzas. The dome of San Michele church and the pointed Aragonese tower of the church of San Francesco dominate the city skyline and can be seen from many miles away.
Our detailed walking and cultural notes will allow you to explore this corner of Sardinia at your own pace, through a varied landscape that will give you a real feel for this land, its people and its heritage. We recommend a number of idyllic coastal walks including one that descends 700 steps to visit the Grotta del Nettuno. You can also visit the area of Torralba and the Valley of the Nuraghi with its 40 archaeological sites.
Set in splendid isolation, a few miles north of Alghero, La Collina comprises a series of beautifully renovated and restored lodgings within the grounds of an immaculate podere or country estate. Choose from terraced 1-bedroom single-storey apartments (sleeping 2-4), 2 or 3-bedroom apartment suites on two floors (sleeping 6-8) and detached 1-bedroom cottages (sleeping 2-4) offering more privacy and seclusion
All properties are furnished to the highest standards in true Sardinian style and their hillside location offers panoramic views over the surrounding countryside with the azure blue sea in the distance. There are two shared panoramic pools for guests’ use and, should you not wish to make use of the well-equipped kitchen, local specialities can be enjoyed at the estate’s own characterful restaurant.
