With its timeless landscapes, fairy-tale châteaux and unspoiled medieval villages of turreted mansions, the ancient region of Quercy is a joy to discover. The area north of Rocamadour boasts many idyllic spots, including Collonges-la-Rouge, Loubressac and Carennac, while the undulating countryside is ideal for gentle exploration on foot or by car. The colourful, inviting stalls of the regional markets, laden with fresh, locally-grown produce, make self-catering a pleasure but you are sure to be tempted by the local restaurants and tasty dishes featuring local delicacies, like goose liver pâté, truffles and duck.

Carennac

The medieval village of Carennac

In a peaceful countryside location, Le Domaine makes the perfect base from which to explore. This is wonderful walking country and inviting footpaths lead directly from your doorstep including an easy circuit, for which we provide walking notes, that takes you to the attractive village of Creysse with its château and ancient church, good picnic places by the river and canoes for hire. Another route begins at the hill-top village of Loubressac, with spectacular views across the valley, and takes in the picture-book village of Autoire and nearby waterfalls. Alternatively, you can explore the caves of the extensive Gouffre de Padirac (pay locally), partly on foot and partly by boat.

From the unspoiled village of Calès you can enjoy a splendid circuit that takes you past two riverside châteaux at Le Bastit and Treyne. As you walk through the oak woods, look out for signs of wild boar, roe deer, red squirrels, buzzards and woodpeckers. For fantastic views up and down the majestic River Dordogne, another route begins by walking alongside the river before climbing the cliff path for panoramic views in all directions. We provide notes for all these walks.

La Domaine

Idyllic rural setting

We offer two properties at Le Domaine, a converted farmhouse near the pretty town of Martel. Both Wisteria House and Walnut House are well-equipped and characterful with exposed stone walls and wooden beams, a private garden and a barbecue area. Nelly and Maurice Chavant, who run the small guesthouse at le Domaine, provide the warmest of welcomes and, if you prefer not to self-cater, you can choose to join them and other guests around the large farmhouse table for a convivial dinner (pay locally). The swimming pool is shared between the guesthouse and the two houses.
