Simple yet delicious traditional cuisine

Come to Forcalquier and you can immerse yourselves in a land of olive trees and lavender fields, of walled villages that crown the hill-tops, and monuments that still testify, some two millennia later, to the magnificent engineering of the Romans.

Stroll through cobbled streets lined with houses of honey-coloured stone, their shutters closed against the southern sun, delight in the scent of wild thyme and rosemary as you walk or cycle across the undulating hills, enjoy an excursion to the papal city of Avignon, or marvel at the astonishing Verdon Gorge which cuts through the limestone landscape.

The famous ochre of Roussillon

Do not neglect Forcalquier itself, an atmospheric town with an ancient citadel which commands far-reaching views over these alluring landscapes. Below, the square serves as the setting for a colourful weekly market where you can buy fresh produce and local crafts every Monday, while the surrounding streets hide cafés, restaurants and a bicycle hire shop.

Discover delightful villages on pleasant walks

To help you make the most of your time away, we suggest three gentle (grade 1-2) walking routes in the local area, the first of which starts directly from the estate (the other two are a short drive away):

Notre Dame de Salagon (12km, 5h): this varied circuit skirts the lake to the west of Forcalquier, leading through light woodland of oaks, as well as delightful sections of wilderness, before returning via the medieval gardens and priory church of Notre Dame de Salagon (pay locally if you choose to visit).
Romantic Ruins (11km, 3h or 18km, 5h): starting and finishing in the sleepy village of Reillanne, this walk leads down panoramic paths to the romantic ruins of the 12th-century Carluc Priory, a lovely spot for a leisurely picnic. To extend the walk, you could return via the exquisite and very panoramic hill-top village of Montjustin.
Hill-top Lurs (10km, 4h): walk eastwards across pastoral landscapes to the beautiful hill-top village of Lurs, which has a ruined castle and a pretty belltower, not to mention sweeping views of the broad valley of the River Durance.

The cottage villa with gardens and pool

If you prefer to explore on two wheels, we can provide notes for two cycling routes instead which take in Carluc Priory and Lurs. Please let us know whether you would prefer the walking or cycling notes.

The Maisons de Campagne are located about a kilometre from the centre of the town, on the outskirts of Forcalquier. You are warmly welcomed by Georges and Virginia Sanchez, with whom we have worked for many years - they also own the stylish hotel-restaurant just beyond the villas where you can dine in the evening if you don’t feel like cooking (pay locally).

Exquisitely furnished bedrooms

The plain façades of these modern villas belie beautiful interiors which have been furnished and decorated to a high standard with great attention to detail, the soft, muted tones creating a feeling of space and airiness. Each has a private pool, where you can relax after a rewarding day of sightseeing, walking or cycling.
