Les Collines Rouges, Dordogne• charming accommodation • peaceful location • shared pool • canoeing
The Cottage: Activities/facilities available: Lush green rolling hills lead down to the confluence of two of France’s best loved rivers, the Dordogne and the Vézère, an area occupied by prehistoric man for millennia, and whose legacy is the wealth of incredible cave paintings and engravings at Lascaux, Les Eyzies and Rouffignac.
It is in this fertile region, nestling in the countryside between the historic city of Périgueux and the renowned ‘capital of pre-history’, Les Eyzies, that you will find the tranquil and secluded Les Collines Rouges, a beautifully renovated gite. This quiet location is the perfect place for couples who want to get away from it all while still offering plenty to see and do
New this year, the tasteful accommodation comprises a sitting/dining area with a modern, well-equipped kitchen, double bedroom and shower room, offering superb views across the surrounding countryside. Outside, a private terrace and barbecue area is the perfect place to have a leisurely breakfast or to savour a glass of the local Pécharmant wine on a quiet evening. Swiss owners, Jean and Josette - who live next door - are more than happy for guests to enjoy a refreshing dip in their swimming pool. Click here to see gallery of images of the property.
For shops, the lively town of Le Bugue is 18 kilometres to the south while the hilltop market village of Rouffignac is only 9 kilometres away. Josette also has a flourishing kitchen garden and it may be possible to buy fresh produce from her or from a nearby local farmer who sells fruit and vegetables directly to the public.
This is good walking country, with quiet lanes leading through the undulating countryside. However, the opportunities for canoeing on the Dordogne and Vézère rivers should not be missed. Our favourite place is picturesque La Roque Gageac, from where you can enjoy a leisurely paddle through dramatic scenery, admiring châteaux perched on the clifftops above, and stopping for a swim or a picnic.
Nearby towns worthy of exploration include Périgueux, where you discover Roman and medieval architecture, including the unusual 10th-century Cathedral de Saint Front; Limeuil, one of the most beautiful villages in France, and the medieval jewel that is Sarlat-la-Canéda, where you can lose yourself in the narrow cobbled streets of one of the largest areas of medieval buildings in the world.
