Ediths and Annies Farmhouses

Edith's picturesque chalet farm

Light-green meadows, bottle-green forests, yellow flowers, snow-capped peaks, houses of dark-brown wood, red geraniums in window-boxes - Switzerland delights with its colours. Right in the very heart of the country, Sörenberg is no exception. Nestling in a high valley, the village affords magnificent views across pastures grazed by cows to the Brienzer Rothorn (2,100 metres). It is a sleepy place, tending only to wake from its slumber in July and August, and as such makes a wonderful retreat for couples and families alike (be sure to take your phrasebook!).

The walking opportunities here are endless - we provide notes for a total of twelve walks for all levels in our documentation. Some of the highlights include:

Chessiloch Gorge (40mins, easy): stroll through the gorge to its small but beautiful waterfall.
Panoramarundweg (4km, easy): as its name suggests, this gentle path affords excellent views over the surrounding area.
Glaubenbielen Farm (13km, moderate): ascend to this mountain farm and roam across the high pastures (which make great picnic spots with fantastic mountain views) before descending along a different route.
The River Walk (up to 16km, easy): follow the River Waldemme downstream as far as you like through several typical villages.
Kemmeriboden (7.5km, easy): this very pretty route leads down a beautiful valley with beech woods, a mountain stream and flower-filled pastures.
Semensee (8km, moderate): for very different scenery reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands, choose this walk around Lake Semen.
The Eisee (8km, moderate): ascend through a spectacular valley to beautiful Lake Ei, from where you can continue on foot (or take the chairlift) to the top of the Rothorn with its amazing views of the Eiger, Jungfrau and Mönch.
Along the Ridge (15km, moderate): a wonderful walk that leads east along the ridge from the Rothorn to Schönbüel, rewarding you with far-reaching views.
Hengst (8km, challenging): though demanding, this walk is well worth it for the 360-degree panorama that encompasses some of the highest, most awe-inspiring peaks in the Bernese Oberland.

Sörenberg offers everything you might need: a supermarket, a sprinkling of eateries, an indoor swimming pool, mini golf, a summer toboggan run, tennis courts, and a cable car to the Brienzer Rothorn’s summit. Choose a clear day for this - the views towards the Eiger are unforgettable. For a change of scenery, the atmospheric lakeside city of Lucerne is only an hour’s drive away, and it is worth taking a boat across its lake for a different perspective of the mountains. There are good bus connections to Bern, Interlaken and Lucerne, departing from the post office.

Sorenberg

Unspoiled traditional Sörenberg

One of the best ways to enjoy the High Alps is to stay in a self-contained apartment within a traditional Swiss farmhouse, where you are welcomed warmly by your hosts. We offer three such apartments, all rustic in style and boasting superb mountain views.

Perhaps the best vistas are enjoyed by Ida’s farmhouse (sleeps 2) from its glorious location on the Brienzer Rothorn’s slopes. The simple, wood-panelled apartment on the first floor is ideal for couples, with a large twin bedroom, a well-equipped kitchen (complete with a dishwasher), a panoramic sitting-cum-dining room and an outdoor picnic table from which to watch the occasional comings and goings on the farm. Opposite, a path leads into the mountains, while another leads down to the village, a 20-minute walk.

The great feature of the larger apartments is the panoramic balcony. Edith’s farmhouse (sleeps up to 6), which the family vacates for three months in favour of their summer farm, ensuring you privacy for much of the season, sits in a south-facing position at the entrance to Sörenberg, a ten-minute stroll from the centre. The apartment is on the third floor, so doesn’t suit those with limited mobility, but is great for families. There are three twin bedrooms (two with a washbasin), a shower room, a sitting-cum-dining room leading onto the balcony, and a well-equipped kitchen including a dishwasher.

Annie’s farmhouse (sleeps up to 6) is located 2 kilometres beyond the village centre in a sunny, south-facing position. Panelled with light wood, the spacious apartment occupies the entire second floor, with three double/twin bedrooms, a large sitting-cum-dining room leading onto the balcony, a shower room and a well-equipped kitchen.
