The Bernese Oberland is justly famed as the most dramatic region of Switzerland, but the romantic names of the Eiger, Jungfrau and Schilthorn are but part of the story. The Oberland also possesses picturesque villages tucked away in quiet, sheltered valleys, where you will find a special serenity. For walking, few regions are the Oberland’s equal. Well-waymarked paths offer thrilling views at every turn, with vivid green meadows giving way to awe-inspiring, snow-capped peaks.
Archetypal flower-filled Alpine meadows and pleasant forests of deep green pine trees surround the bustling village of Adelboden, which boasts superb views down into the valley and south to the glacier-topped Wildstrübel. Throughout the year, this region is a delight to explore, with miles of good footpaths that allow you to enjoy the clear Alpine air. This is a true paradise for those who love walking, although there is also access to swimming and tennis in the village as well as horse riding nearby.
Walking options include taking the bus to nearby Kandersteg and walking back along an immensely rewarding high-level route that heads up to the rocky Bunderchrinde Pass (2,000 metres), high meadows from where the views often stretch as far as distant Lake Thun. Alternatively, enjoy a fabulous circuit up onto the of the Engstligenap plateau beneath the towering peaks of the Steghorn and Wildstrübel.
What makes the area so appealing for walkers are the number of cable cars that allow you to ride high into the mountains before making a leisurely descent on foot - all the views and dramatic scenery but with only half the effort. For example, take the cable car to the striking summit of Hahnenmoos and walk back down the ridge via Sillerenbüel and Gilbach to the village.
This newly-built apartment is located within a traditional chalet building, a gentle 20-minute stroll from the centre of the village, with a bar/restaurant, small bakery and grocery shop nearby. The whole area is served by an excellent bus service and the bus stop is only 100m away. With an included 7-day travel pass (offering 3 days’ free travel and the others at reduced fares) you have ample time to explore: for a day out, the pretty lakeside town of Spiez is only an hour away.
