Taking a responsible approach to tourism

Our walking and cycling holidays are, of their nature, ‘green’, but we readily admit that travelling to your destination by air is not. If rail travel – the most environmentally friendly way of getting to and from your holiday – is not an option for your chosen destination, you may instead like to consider reducing your environmental footprint by offsetting your carbon emissions through Climate Care.

Climate Care

Climate Care was established in 1998 with the aim of reducing the amount of CO2 – one of the main greenhouse gases – in the atmosphere and hence helping to tackle climate change. The concept is simple: you can ‘neutralise’ the negative environmental impact of your activities by asking Climate Care to calculate how much CO2 will be emitted by these activities and paying to offset the emissions. The money that Climate Care raises in this way is used to fund projects based around renewable energy, improving energy efficiency and, to a lesser degree, reforestation. It only funds projects that would not have been implemented without its financial backing, thus it does not help governments and other bodies to honour their pledges to reduce emissions, but rather its projects will be in addition to governmental strategies.

How you can offset your air travel emissions

At Inntravel, we offset all our business air travel emissions with a financial contribution to Climate Care. To neutralise the impact of your own flights to your chosen holiday destination, visit www.climatecare.org/inntravel, where you will find the Air Travel Calculator. Enter your departure airport and your destination airport, and let it work out the amount of CO2 emitted over the course of your flight. At the same time, it will calculate how much you should contribute to offset this, which you can then pay via their secure server. To give you some examples, a two-hour flight from Heathrow tends to release around 0.15 tonnes of CO2 per passenger, while a return flight between Edinburgh and Tenerife would produce 0.71 tonnes per passenger and could be offset by paying just £5.31.
