Grade 2 7 nights good walking with thrilling journeys on cable cars, boats & trains This is a unique walk in some of Switzerland's most awe-inspiring landscapes. It combines superb walking with thrilling boat, rail and cable car journeys (all included) that take you right into the heart of the mountains, avoiding too many steep sections on foot. As such, it is suitable for all of average fitness, revealing constantly changing panoramas of this majestic lake. Lake Geneva to Lake Neuchâtel
The wooded Jura Alps rise above Lake Geneva and curve round to Lake Neuchâtel, and from the broad ridge you enjoy one of the greatest of Alpine views across the lakes to snow-capped Mont Blanc, the Eiger and the Matterhorn in good weather. This is a dramatic walk from the hamlet of La Cure on the border, then into France and back into Switzerland for your final night at Les Rasses. Around the Vaudoise Alps (new for 2008)
Situated to the east of Lake Geneva and the River Rhone, the Vaudoise Alps rise up to impressive heights. With snow-capped peaks and wooded lower slopes the Vaudoise are dotted with small traditional villages nestling amongst spectacular scenery. Linked by cable cars, cog railways and pleasant waymarked walking routes, this is the perfect place to explore and walk the high Alps.
The Villages of the Engadine
Marvel at the silent splendour of the Engadine’s ancient villages, some of the most beautiful in all of the Alps, on this marvellous discovery of the lower and upper Engadine – both very different in character – which features stays in three of the region's most handsome villages. Sometimes you walk near the River Inn, sometimes across the upper slopes, so as to gain different perspectives of this twisting valley, and there are opportunities, if you wish, to get into the high mountains and the Swiss National Park. Grades 2 & 3 7 nights little-known Swiss valley spectacular walking This high-level route offers thoroughly rewarding walking through the awe-inspiring scenery of the little-discovered Val d'Anniviers, a high, sunny valley in the French-speaking Valais with a strong individuality and rich traditions. The views are superb – as you wind your way along the mountain paths, you will glimpse the mighty Matterhorn beyond the head of the valley in clear weather. Enjoy grade 3 options high into the mountains, with opportunities to shorten ascents with cable cars to make walks of a grade 2 standard. Lake Oeschinensee & Beyond
Arguably one of Switzerland’s most exquisite lakes, emerald Oeschinensee is one of the jewels of the Bernese Oberland, set in an amphitheatre of mountains which at points rise sheer from the water. In the valley below nestles the picture-book village of Kandersteg whose inspirational mountain views are more than enough to tempt you onto the many well-waymarked paths which explore the broad Kander Valley, its various spurs, and the mountains above. Your base is the Hotel Victoria, right in the centre of Kandersteg, offering outstanding hospitality and an indoor pool.
Bernese Oberland, the High Route
Grade 3 7 nights thrilling mountain scenery thoroughly rewarding walking This highly rewarding route is another Alpine classic, passing beneath the famous peaks of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, all around 4,000 metres high, and ascending to some of the finest passes of the Bernese Oberland. The walking is among the most challenging in our programme, with demanding ascents and descents each day, but your efforts are rewarded with breathtaking views. |
