Austria's Alpine Heartland around Zell am See

Dramatic mountains and deep blue lakes

In the heart of Austria’s Leoganger Steinberge Alps lies the picturesque Zeller See, a glittering lake hemmed in by mighty snow-capped peaks. This is wonderful walking country with some spectacular views across forested mountain slopes, crystal clear lakes and south to the mighty Grossglockner (the highest mountain in Austria) in the Höhe Tauern National Park. Pretty villages, traditional hotels and wonderful local delicacies complement the splendour of the landscape.

The quiet mountain villages of Leogang, Hinterglemm and Kaprun, and the ridges that shelter them, exemplify all that is glorious about walking in Salzburgerland. With well-waymarked footpaths leading in all directions - and cable cars to ease your way up the steeper slopes - you will revel in the fresh mountain air and rewarding views that seem to go on forever.

Nights: 7
Grade: 2-3, accessible, high-altitude walking
Terrain: broad ridges, meadows & mountain paths
Hotels: one 3-star hotel, two 4-start hotels
Meals: breakfast each day, dinner on 7 nights
Climate: Austrian summers are warm and sunny, with pleasant mountain breezes - perfect walking conditions. Temperatures average 16.5°C in June, rising to around 20°C in July and August.

Starting point: You begin with 2 nights in unspoiled Leogang at the historic 4-star 14th-century Hotel Kirchenwirt.

Day 1: On your day here, you can take the gondola (pay locally) up to the Berghaus Asizt and walk along the high ridge which offers tremendous views over the snow-capped peaks of the Höhe Tauern range to the south.

Accommodation: Hotel Kirchenwirt. Cosy and full of history, this intimate family-run hotel offers an atmospheric restaurant famed for its varied Austrian cuisine. (During July, you will stay in the hotel’s spacious apartments just 100m away and use the hotel’s restaurant.)

Day 2: The next day after a short transfer, you climb gradually past traditional mountain farms beneath the rocky walls of the Spielberghorn - with an option to reach its precipitous peak - before descending into Saalbach Hinterglemm and your next hotel for two nights.

Accommodation: The 3-star Hotel Wiesenegg is a traditional family-run hotel on the edge of the small village of Hinterglemm. With excellent food and a warm welcome, you will find this the perfect place to relax - and to enjoy the outdoor pool after a rewarding walk in the hills. The views from the dining terrace are spectacular and give a hint of the walking to come.

Day 3: On day three, we suggest a circuit in a remote upper valley where paths lead through flower-filled meadows beneath the dramatic headwall of Staffkogel. An hourly post bus offers the opportunity to ride there or back (pay locally).

Accommodation: Hotel Wiesenegg (as above)

Day 4: The walk from Hinterglemm to Kaprun is the highlight of any visit to this region. From Saalbach, you take the cable car (included) up to Schattberg and then enjoy a 17km ridge walk along the panoramic Pinzgauger Spaziergang to Zell am See, where you will be rewarded with truly superior views along the whole length of this undulating ridge. From here you take the cable car (included) down to Zell am See and then a short bus ride to Kaprun (pay locally).

Accommodation: Your final hotel, the Kapruner Hof, is situated beside a tranquil river on the outskirts of this pretty village, and offers comfortable rooms (Romantik Suite £9pp/n), an excellent restaurant and a small spa, complete with sauna, jacuzzi and relaxation room.

Days 5-6: For your final days around Kaprun, the walking options are endless; a trip up the Maiskogel cableway gives access to some wonderful routes or alternatively the views from the top of the Kitzsteinhorn over the glacier and towards the peak of the Grossglocker, are not to be missed. This remarkable mountain scenery will live with you for many years to come.

Accommodation: Kapruner Hof (as above)
