Around the Vaudoise Alps

An invigorating landscape above Lake Geneva

Situated to the east of Lake Geneva and the River Rhône, the Vaudoise Alps are a classic alpine landscape with towering jagged peaks and wide green valleys. Sunny slopes, wooded ridges and pretty villages make this an idyllic place to explore on foot. Enjoy exhilarating walking amid some of Switzerland’s most spectacular scenery, while staying at typically traditional and hospitable chalet hotels.

The Vaudoise Alps rise abruptly from the Rhône Valley south of Lake Geneva to reach impressive heights. With snow-capped peaks and wooded lower slopes, the Vaudoise are dotted with small traditional villages nestling amongst this spectacular scenery. Linked by cable cars, cog railways and pleasant waymarked walking routes, this is the perfect place to explore and walk the high Alps.

Nights: 7
Grade: 2-3, accessible high altitude walking
Terrain: broad ridges, meadows and mountain tracks
Hotels: one 2-star hotel; two 3-star hotels & one 4-star hotel
Meals: breakfast every day, plus 6 dinners
Climate: summers in the Jura are warm and sunny, with pleasant mountain breezes. Temperatures average 17°C in June, 19°C in July and August, and 15.5°C in September.

Starting point: The walk begins with two nights at Le Grand Chalet in Leysin, set high above the vines of the Valley des Ormonts. From the panoramic terrace you can enjoy “the best views in Switzerland”, according to your hosts, the Bonelli family, and this same view is enjoyed from many of the bedrooms.

Day 1: For your day in Leysin, we recommend a circuit that leads up to La Rondaz, before meandering down a wooded ridge via La Grande Crevasse to Le Roc de Veyges, enjoying stunning views towards Lac Léman (Lake Geneva). (8km)

Accommodation: Le Grand Chalet (as above)

Day 2: The following day, you walk along pine-clad hillsides past a number of clear blue mountain lakes to the small hamlet of Les Mosses, where you spend one night. (14km)

Accommodation: The family-run Hotel-Restaurant du Chaussy, a small, welcoming restaurant with simple, yet comfortable en-suite rooms.

Day 3: From Les Mosses, wander beneath towering peaks and through a series of pretty villages on your way to Les Diablerets and catch your first real glimpse of the mighty glacier rising up at the end of the valley. Here you spend the next two nights. (15km)

Accommodation: Hostellerie Les Sources, a cosy hotel which provides easy access to some wonderful walking into the mountains.

Day 4: In Les Diablerets, you have a choice; we provide notes for a circuit from the village, or, alternatively, you could visit the famous Glacier 3000 for a truly impressive view over the alpine range. Our walk climbs steadily towards Isenau above the main village from where you can either continue to climb over the summit of La Palette, or walk round to the Col de Vore. Both routes bring you out at the picturesque Lac Retaud from where you descend into the valley and down to Les Diablerets past the dramatic Cascade du Dar waterfall. (16km)

Accommodation: Hostellerie Les Sources (as above)

Day 5: You walk through wooded hills and past small lakes to the Roc d’Orsay, a magnificent viewpoint which takes in the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc and the Jungfrau-Eiger massif. Villars is the perfect base for hours of long summer walks, made all the more easy with the included local ‘Freedom Pass’ that allows free use of some local cable cars, bus and train services. (17km)

Accommodation: Your base for the last two nights is the chic village of Villars and the beautiful Hotel La Renardière.

Day 6: For your final day, we suggest a route into the next valley to visit the pretty village of Gryon, from where more beautiful views are a fitting reminder of your stay in the Vaudoise Alps. (20km)

Accommodation: Hotel La Renardière (as above)
