Samos - an Aegean Island
Self-guided inn-to-inn walking route
* explore wild & beautiful bays * inspirational walking & views
Green, enchanting and varied in its landscapes, Samos is an Aegean gem. Our walk leads you around the island, from its northern shoreline, round the mountainous west, to the warm waters of the popular southern coast. Using three simple, relaxed hotels as bases, our route is leisurely, though with plenty to captivate keen walkers. The Aegean provides fresh fish and seafood, and do not neglect the island’s surprisingly good wines, including the light Samaina whites.
Vineyards, woods, rugged peaks
Your discovery of Samos starts in the north, in Platanakia, where Michalis and his mother, Maria, welcome you for three nights at the Hotel Iro. We suggest two circular walks for your days here – one leading through a deep valley in which nightingales can sometimes be heard; the other crossing the verdant lower slopes of Mount Ambelos. Your next base is Karlovassi, a lively fishing port where you stay two nights at the Hotel Astir. Here, we include one dinner, leaving you free (as at your first hotel) to eat at one of the town’s many tavernas on the second night. Another attractive circuit takes you across green hills to the timeless hillside village of Nikoloudes and a secluded bay, before a day of relaxation in Karlovassi - there is a long pebble beach for cooling dips and plenty of shops and cafés.
A wonderful coastal walk
The next day’s walk is a real highlight, a superb coastal route past some of the island’s wildest and most beautiful bays to reach Drakei, where a taxi will be waiting to take you to the south coast for two nights in Ormos Marathokambos. Here, the family-run Kerkis Bay Hotel offers good standards of comfort, each room having its own small balcony. There is a taverna at the hotel, or choose to dine at one of the neighbouring ones. Your last walk is up the slopes of the island’s highest peak, Vigla, to reach the ancient monastery of Moni Evangelistria, from where, on clear days, the views stretch over the sea to the surrounding islands. Truly inspirational.
Close at hand
This small island has much to offer. Votsalakia, a pretty seaside village filled with tavernas and souvenir shops, is the starting point for walking up to the ‘Monastery of Evangelistria’, or even up to the lower slopes of Mount Kerkis. It is possible to climb to the top, though at 1443 metres high, the last 43 are the hardest! Located at the east side of this mountain, only 3km from Kampos Marahokampou, is an accessible cave system, named after the philosopher, Pythagoras. In Karlovassi, the Genovese Castle is well worth a visit; while you can reach the waterfalls of Potami after a 2km walk through one of the most beautiful regions of the island.
